From the berth
Shuttle to the terminal (about 1 km), then taxi about 8 min, roughly ¥1,400 on the meter
From the Hirara Port Cruise Berth, the only berth. The national spec sheet gives a terminal about 1 km from the berth with a passenger shuttle and a taxi pool of about 15 to 20 cars. The drive from the terminal is 4.89 km, about 8 minutes (a computed route). The fare is worked out from the Okinawa General Bureau's remote-island tariff of August 2023 (¥500 first 1.136 km, then ¥100 per 463 m, plus a time charge when slow), distance only, so it is a floor.

Why it's worth your hours

This is the city's own museum, run by the education board, and it is the one place on the island that explains the island. The city says it collects materials on Miyako's history, folk customs, art and natural science, and that its permanent exhibition is built on the theme of Miyako's nature and climate. It also holds peace exhibitions to pass on records and memories of the war.

That makes it a good fit for a call where the weather is wet or hot, or where you have seen the beaches and want to know what the island is made of. It is a small, indoor, inexpensive visit. If you are 70 or over, show your ID and it is free.

The catch is the calendar and the distance. It is closed Mondays and public holidays, is shut from 10 to 16 October 2026 for cleaning, and sits 4.9 km from the terminal, so it needs a taxi. The city's page lists no exhibit details beyond its themes, so do not expect a headline attraction. If you only have a few hours and fine weather, go to the sea.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Check the date: the museum is shut every Monday, on public holidays and over New Year, and the city's notice closes it from 10 to 16 October 2026.
  2. Last entry is 16:00, half an hour before closing at 16:30.
  3. If you are 70 or over, carry photo ID such as a passport for the free entry.
  4. The museum's address is in Hirara; give the driver the Japanese name 宮古島市総合博物館 and ask for a return pick-up time.
  5. Phone the museum on 0980-73-0567 if you want to confirm the day's opening; its October schedule is posted only as an image.

If you are 70 or over, show your ID and it is free.

Quick answers

Questions people ask here

How much is the Miyakojima City Museum and is it free for seniors?

Adults pay ¥300. The city's page says people aged 70 and over are admitted free if they show ID such as a driving licence. Students pay ¥200 (university and high school) or ¥100 (primary and junior high).

When is the Miyakojima City Museum closed?

Every Monday (and Tuesday too when Monday is a holiday), public holidays, 29 December to 3 January, and any other day the director decides. The city also posted a temporary closure for interior cleaning from Saturday 10 October to Friday 16 October 2026.

How do I get from the Miyakojima cruise port to the museum?

Take the passenger shuttle from the berth to the terminal (about 1 km), then a taxi for about 8 minutes over 4.9 km, which should cost roughly ¥1,400 on the 2023 remote-island tariff. The museum is not on foot from the terminal.

Whatever the plan: back aboard 60 minutes before all-aboard. Full port context on the Miyakojima guide.
