Harimizu Utaki is the island's founding sacred site, where the gods who created Miyako are said to have landed, and it is still an active place of prayer rather than a monument. The nearby jintozei stone was used to measure whether a person was tall enough to owe the poll tax, a levy that crushed these islands until 1903.
