The island’s oldest shrine, the poll-tax stone and the public market inside one flat kilometre — the only major sight cluster reachable on foot from the cruise terminal.

The story

Why Hirara town walk: utaki, stone, market is famous

Harimizu Utaki is the island's founding sacred site, where the gods who created Miyako are said to have landed, and it is still an active place of prayer rather than a monument. The nearby jintozei stone is the folk memorial of the poll tax that crushed these islands until 1903; the tale that anyone taller than it owed the tax is legend, not record.
