Jinnamgwan, National Treasure No. 304, is the largest single-storey wooden hall in Korea and was the headquarters of the Jeolla Left Naval Command. It reopened at the end of May 2025 after a ten-year dismantle-and-rebuild; 09:00–17:00 in winter, to 18:00 in summer, free. The turtle-ship replica at Yi Sun-sin Square is a short walk below it.
- Short enough to be certain of: 1 hr 30 min door to door, so even a tender day works.
- No single published ride covers this one. Budget for a taxi both ways, or fold it into a guided day.
Why Jinnamgwan and Yi Sun-sin Square is famous
Jinnamgwan, National Treasure No. 304, is the largest single-storey wooden hall in Korea and was the headquarters of the Jeolla Left Naval Command, the post Yi Sun-sin held. It was dismantled for a full rebuild from December 2015 and reopened to the public at the end of May 2025. The rebuilt hall has 70 pillars and 54,000 hand-fired tiles; the original name-board was replaced by a replica. Admission is free. Below it, Yi Sun-sin Square has a full-size replica of the Geobukseon, the turtle ship, which you can board. The square hosts the Geobukseon Festival each May.
Jinnamgwan and Yi Sun-sin Square and your ship
Both pins on one map, so the distance is a fact rather than a feeling.
Where the 1 hr 30 min goes
Counted from the moment you step off the gangway. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.
7 minutes each way is the measured figure for taxi ~7 min, about ₩4,800; or 35 min on foot, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 1 hr 16 min in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.
Routes that already include it
Each one is a finished day we have walked and timed, with this stop in it. Read the route rather than assembling it yourself.
What to put beside it
Each of these still lands you back aboard with the hour to spare.
