The story

Why Yonaha Maehama beach is famous

Seven kilometres of white sand facing the island of Kurima, regularly named the best beach in Japan and nicknamed the East China Sea's finest mile. The sand is powdered coral rather than quartz, which is why it stays cool underfoot and why the water reads that particular blue.

Seven kilometres of sand so fine it squeaks, sloping into water that goes from glass to turquoise to ultramarine over a hundred metres — Maehama is the beach that wins the domestic “best in Japan” rankings so routinely that the island has stopped being surprised. Across the strait sits Kurima island and its bridge, which is why the postcard view has a horizon with a line through it.

It is also honest in a way resort beaches are not: this is a public municipal beach with modest facilities, not a hotel frontage. In season there are showers, rentals and a netted swimming area; out of season there is sand, light and almost nobody.

Before you go

Things worth knowing

  • The sand is coral-white and reflective — the sunscreen you need is more than you think.
  • Swim inside the netted area in season; the strait beyond has real current toward the bridge.
  • The southern end, away from the facilities, empties out fast — ten minutes of walking buys near-solitude.
  • Off season (Nov–Mar) the beach is walk-and-photograph territory: mild, windy, and beautiful in a colder palette.

How do I get to Maehama from the cruise ship?

By pre-arranged car — about 20 minutes from Hirara Port. Miyakojima has no trains, a thin bus service and a taxi fleet that is fully booked on ship days, so arrange a rental car, charter taxi or excursion before you sail. There is no reliable way to improvise the trip from the quay.

Is Yonaha Maehama really the best beach in Japan?

It wins the major domestic rankings often enough that the claim is fair. What that means in practice: the finest sand in the country, a long shallow entry, and a view across the strait to Kurima bridge. What it does not mean: resort infrastructure. It is a public beach with seasonal facilities, which is part of its charm.
