The 1.6 km main street is the souvenir strip, and it is fine. The reason to walk it is what runs off it — the covered market arcades and Tsuboya, which are the real thing one block away.
Kokusai-dori is 1.6 kilometres of shops rebuilt from nothing after 1945, which is why Okinawans call it the Miracle Mile. It is frankly touristy. The instruction that matters is the one step sideways: the covered market lanes behind it are where the city actually shops.
