Shuri was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, an independent state trading with China, Korea and Southeast Asia for 450 years. It was destroyed in the 1945 battle, rebuilt in 1992, and burned again in October 2019. The current reconstruction is being done in public, so what you see is the work itself.
Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. Before that it was a kingdom for 450 years, with its own king, its own languages, its own diplomacy — and a foreign policy of paying tribute to China while being militarily controlled by a Japanese domain, simultaneously, for two and a half centuries.
