Ranked by one question: if you had one call here, what would you regret missing?

  1. See~3h by monorailFits 2–3h

    Shuri Castle and the rebuild

The seat of an independent kingdom for 450 years — no keep, curving limestone walls, a vermilion Chinese-influenced hall. It burned in 2019, was rebuilt in public view, and stands complete again; the interior opens on 23 November 2026.

  2. Eat~1.5hFits 2–3h

Buy downstairs, eat upstairs at Makishi

Okinawa's reef fish are the wrong colours — electric blue, parrot green, hard red. Choose one on the ground floor, carry it up, and the second-floor kitchens cook it two ways for a small fee.

  3. See~4h round tripNeeds 4–6h

    Peace Memorial Park & Himeyuri

The Cornerstone of Peace carries over 240,000 names — every nationality, both sides, no separation. Ten minutes away, Himeyuri tells it through the student nurses. Give it three hours and nothing after.

  4. Eat~1.5hFits 2–3h

    Goya champuru and Okinawa soba

Bitter melon stir-fried with tofu, egg and pork, and thick wheat noodles in pork-and-bonito broth that contain no buckwheat at all. This is a separate cuisine, not Japanese food with a suntan.

  5. Take home~1hFits 2–3h

    Shisa on Tsuboya yachimun street

Potters have worked this street since 1682, when the kingdom gathered its kilns here. Buy shisa in pairs — one mouth open to take in fortune, one closed to keep it. A single one is half a guardian.

  6. Morning food and culture walk
    Do · bookable~4h guidedNeeds 4–6h

    Morning food and culture walk

The highest-rated small-group option here, and the one that solves the language gap in the market and the back streets. Worth it on a call where you want depth rather than distance.

  7. Eat~1.5h eveningFits 2–3h

    Kusu awamori, cut with water

Six hundred years old, distilled from Thai rice with a black mould, and aged in clay. Order kusu — three years or more — and take it mizuwari. The gap between kusu and new is larger than the price suggests.

  8. See~2.5hFits 2–3h

    Shikinaen royal garden

Where the Ryukyu kings entertained Chinese envoys — a pond garden with a hexagonal Chinese pavilion and a deliberately hidden view, designed so visitors could not see how small the kingdom was.

  9. See~1.5hFits 2–3h

    Kokusai-dori, then one block sideways

The 1.6 km main street is the souvenir strip, and it is fine. The reason to walk it is what runs off it — the covered market arcades and Tsuboya, which are the real thing one block away.

  10. Ryusou dress and photographs
    Do · bookable~2hFits 2–3h

    Ryusou dress and photographs

Ryukyuan court dress is nothing like a kimono — bingata colour at full saturation, worn loose. A genuinely Okinawan version of an experience most ports offer generically.

The one rule: every time above includes getting back — but always keep 60 minutes in reserve before all-aboard. Plan the day itself on the Naha port guide.
