Whale sharks in a nine-metre-deep central tank, and it is beside the cruise berth. On weekdays in October and November it opens at 10:30, hours after most ships arrive, so do it at the end of the day. At weekends and holidays it opens 8:30–9:30.

Why Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is famous
Kaiyukan opened in 1990 and was then the largest aquarium in the world. Its structure is one idea: a single central tank holding whale sharks, with a spiral walk that takes you down past it repeatedly. It is fully indoors, which makes it the strongest wet-weather answer in Osaka.
Kaiyukan is among the largest aquariums in the world, and it is built around one idea: a single Pacific Ocean tank, nine metres deep, holding about 5,400 tonnes of water. You ride an escalator to the eighth floor and walk one continuous spiral down around it, seeing the same tank from 14 angles. Whale sharks, manta rays and hammerheads share the big tank.
The top floors are the warm-up: sea otters and California sea lions near the surface. The deep floors are the payoff. The Osaka tourism bureau notes elevators reach every floor if you would prefer to skip the ramp, which matters for a day on your feet. Next door in the Tempozan harbour village are a Ferris wheel, a sailing-ship sightseeing boat and a market, all listed on the aquarium's site.
The catch: weekends and holidays cost more and crowd, school groups slow the one-way spiral, and the aquarium sells date-timed e-tickets, so a spontaneous walk-up may wait. On weekdays it opens at 10:30, so treat it as the end of your day or a wet-day answer, and spend the morning in town.
Things worth knowing
- Buy a date-timed e-ticket before you land; the aquarium recommends it and says walk-up tickets may not give you your preferred time.
- Prices change by date: adults pay ¥2,800 on most autumn 2026 dates, more on some holidays and weekends. There is no senior rate.
- Use the elevators to reach any floor if the ramp is too much; the tourism bureau says they skip the ramp entirely.
- Let a school group pull ahead on the one-way spiral rather than trying to pass it.

Counted from the moment you step off the gangway, about 30 minutes after the ship arrives. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.
5 minutes each way is the measured figure for walk ~5 min from the ship, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 2 hr 20 min in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.

It is beside the cruise terminal, about 5 minutes on foot (about 310 m, our estimate from the map). You do not need the station; head for the big Ferris wheel.
How much is the Osaka Aquarium and how long does it take?
Adults pay ¥2,800 on most dates, more on some weekends and holidays (¥3,200 on 3 November, ¥3,500 on 22–23 November 2026). There is no senior discount. Allow two to three hours.
Is there a combined ticket?
The aquarium's site lists combined tickets with the Santa Maria sailing-ship boat, Legoland Discovery Center Osaka and the Captain Line shuttle boat; we have not checked their prices. Elevators serve every floor, per the Osaka tourism bureau.
