Every port on this site has a free way into town. Most have a good one. So the question is never “how do I get ashore” — it is whether the day you want is in town at all. When it is, take the shuttle and a taxi and keep your money. When it is not, a car with a driver for the day is the difference between seeing the place and spending the call in transit.
This page puts the two prices side by side for every port where we list a car day: the taxi fare from the berth that our transport board has verified, and the current price of a private car or minivan with a driver, split per head. Then it says which one to book.
The rule of thumb
Draw a 30-kilometre circle around the berth.
- Inside it, the car loses. Japanese taxis are metered, the meter is honest, nobody expects a tip, and the port shuttle — sometimes free, sometimes a few hundred yen — already does the longest leg. A car for the day costs the same whether you use it for eight hours or three.
- Outside it, the car wins, often by a lot. Two taxi legs of 40 minutes each, a driver waiting at a garden for two hours, a return with a meter running through traffic: that day costs as much as the car and comes with none of the certainty. The car is booked to bring you back for all-aboard; a taxi is not.
The 30 km line is not a law. It is where, at Japanese fares, the arithmetic flips.
Where the car pays for itself
- Kagoshima → Chiran. The samurai gardens and the Peace Museum are 35 km south of Marine Port, and no bus from the berth makes the round trip inside a normal call.
- Kobe or Osaka → Kyoto. Trains do it, and our Kyoto-from-Kobe maths says how. But for a party of four wanting Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu and Gion in one day, the car removes three station changes each way.
- Aomori → Hirosaki. The castle town is 40 km inland; the local train works, the car turns a tight day into a comfortable one.
- Yokohama → Mt. Fuji. There is no other way to the Five Lakes and back on a port day, and the 35-year visibility record should be read before paying for it.
- Nagasaki → Shimabara. The peninsula, Unzen and the castle are car country.
- Sakaiminato → the Adachi Museum. Japan’s top-ranked garden is 30 km from the berth with no direct public transport.
- Incheon → Seoul. 48 km and 60–110 minutes each way by road. The guaranteed-return tours exist because a taxi driver has no reason to get you back on time.
- Naha → the south. The Peace Memorial and Okinawa World are not on any tram.
Where it does not
- Hakodate, Otaru, Nagasaki town, Hiroshima city, Kanazawa. Trams, buses and the shuttle cover the whole day for a few hundred yen. A car here buys comfort, not access.
- Busan. The metro and taxis are cheap and the sights are spread in a way a driver helps with — but the small-group day with the Sky Capsule ticket costs less per head than a private car and solves the same problem.
- Any port on a short call. A car booked for six hours is wasted on a four-hour stop.
Driver, or driver and guide?
They are different products. A driver takes you there and waits; a guide explains what you are looking at, handles tickets and lunch, and costs more. Several listings below are the second kind, and some — the Kochi and Kagoshima days, for example — bundle a licensed guide with the car. The page for each one says which, what is included, and where the car actually meets you: a few operators list hotel pickups and treat the cruise terminal as a request, which is the one thing to confirm in writing before you pay.

Taxi fares are from our transport boards, checked against the operators. Car prices are the lowest listed on Viator on the date shown; where the price is per vehicle we have divided it for two, four and six passengers so you can compare with a taxi at a glance.

Three things people get wrong
- Booking the car for the whole call. Book it for the day out and leave the last hour for the shuttle. Most operators sell four-, six- and eight-hour versions.
- Assuming the car comes to the ship. Some do. Some meet at a station. The listing says; so does our page for it.
- Paying for a guide to drive you to a beach. If nobody will need anything explained, a driver-only listing is half the price. If the day is Hiroshima or Nagasaki, the guide is the point.
