The Tokugawa destroyed it in the siege of 1615, rebuilt it larger on top of the ruins in the 1620s, and lightning burned that keep in 1665. What you climb is a 1931 reconstruction in reinforced concrete, restored in 1997, with a lift inside.
The building is not the point; the walls are. The Tokugawa rebuild used stones brought by sea from across western Japan, and the largest — the Octopus Stone at the Sakuramon gate — is estimated at well over a hundred tonnes. They are original, they are enormous, and they are free to walk among.
Five things the plaques won't tell you
- The lift goes up to the 5th floor only; floors 5–8 and the way down are stairs. Wheelchair users and anyone with walking difficulties may use the lift on every floor — ask the staff.
- Look for the Octopus Stone by the Sakuramon gate — one block, well over a hundred tonnes, moved by sea in the 1620s.
- The park is one of Osaka’s great cherry blossom sites in early April, and free.
- The moats are enormous and deceptive — walking the full circuit is over three kilometres.
- The interior is a museum, not a castle. Go for the history displays or skip inside entirely.
