Why it's worth your hours

Shinsekai means New World, and Tsutenkaku is its tower. The tower's observation deck is the way to see it from above; Dotonbori is a different Osaka, and Shinsekai is the quieter alternative.

What you do is eat. Shinsekai is where Osaka goes for kushikatsu, meat and vegetables skewered, breadcrumbed and fried; the usual etiquette is one communal sauce pot per table and no double-dipping, so check the sign in each shop. Ride the tower first, then walk the lanes around it. The tower's official site lists a main observation deck and a special outdoor deck, both on time-reserved tickets.

The catch: it is a half-day add-on rather than a stand-alone sight. If you are after historic Osaka, go to the castle instead.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Book the tower's time-reserved entry online the day before if you can: the tower says tickets can sell out later in the day.
  2. Ebisucho (Sakaisuji line, Exit 3) and the Hankai tram's Ebisucho are 3 minutes from the tower; Dobutsuen-mae (Midosuji, Exit 1) is 6 minutes, per the tower's access page.
  3. Check each kushikatsu shop's sign before you dip: communal sauce is the norm.
  4. The tower's observation deck is ¥1,500 for adults, ¥800 for ages 5–14, and discounts apply for disability card holders (shown on the tower site).
  5. Opening times can change at short notice: the tower announces changes and closures on its official X account.

Quick answers

Questions people ask here

How do I get from the Osaka cruise terminal to Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku?

Walk about 10 minutes to Osakako station, then ride about 21 minutes to Ebisucho station, changing once (¥290 with IC in a Yahoo! Japan route search). The tower is 3 minutes' walk from Ebisucho Exit 3, according to Tsutenkaku's access page.

How much is the Tsutenkaku observation deck?

¥1,500 for adults (15 and over) and ¥800 for children 5–14. Entry is by reserved time slot. Hours are 9:00 to 21:45, with last entry at 21:15.

Is Shinsekai worth it compared with Dotonbori?

It is quieter, cheaper and older in feel. Choose Shinsekai for kushikatsu and a retro tower, Dotonbori for the signs and the canal. On a long call do both.
