Kanazawa Cruise Port: The Complete Guide for 2026–27

Kanazawa is the Japan Sea's intact castle town: Kenroku-en, one of Japan's three great gardens, the Higashi Chaya teahouse streets and Omicho market lie within about a kilometre of each other, but 7–8 km from the ship. Most calls use the Muryoji cruise terminal, 28–35 minutes from Kanazawa Station by bus 04 (¥310, no Suica) or about 15–20 minutes and ¥3,700 by taxi to the garden. On the typical 9–10-hour call all three fit without hurry. MSC Bellissima docks at Ohama, a cargo quay with no daytime bus, so plan taxis there. The decision that shapes your day is taxi or bus: on weekday mornings no bus leaves the terminal between 07:25 and 10:10, and on weekends and holidays the last bus back leaves the station at 15:45.

Your call, your day

What fits the time your ship gives you?

Pick your ship from the official Kanazawa schedule — or just the hours you have — and this page picks the plan and the tours that fit, with the hour before all-aboard already set aside.

Kenroku-en garden

One of Japan's three great gardens, beside the castle it was made for: ponds, stone lanterns and old pines. Allow 1 to 1½ hours; Kanazawa Castle Park is across the road and free to walk.

From the ship Taxi from the Muryoji terminal, about 15–20 minutes and from about ¥3,700. By bus 04 to Kanazawa Station (¥310), then the Loop Bus (¥220, 18 minutes): about 60–75 minutes door to door.

Lanes of lattice-fronted Edo-period teahouses, two of them open inside: Ochaya Shima (¥500) and Kaikaro (¥750). It is also where the gold-leaf soft serve comes from. The city suggests about an hour.

From the ship Taxi from the terminal about ¥3,400. From Kanazawa Station, the Loop Bus to Hashiba-cho, 12 minutes; from Kenroku-en it is about 1.2 km on foot.

Omicho Market

More than 170 shops under one roof, trading for more than 300 years: seafood bowls, sushi counters, sweet shrimp and, from November, crab. Officially open 9:00–16:00, though each shop keeps its own hours.

From the ship About 1 km on foot from Kanazawa Station, or one Loop Bus stop (5 minutes, ¥220). Taxi from the terminal about ¥2,900.

Why Kanazawa is worth getting off the ship for

Kanazawa is a castle town you can still read: Kenroku-en, one of Japan's three great gardens, beside the castle it served; the lattice-fronted teahouses of Higashi Chaya; the earth walls of the Nagamachi samurai quarter; and Omicho, the market that has fed the city for more than 300 years. Gold leaf turns up on everything, soft serve included.

The good news for a port day is how compact the core is. Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya and Omicho lie within about a kilometre of each other, and a tourist Loop Bus runs round all of them every 15–20 minutes. The catch is the first and last 8 km: the cruise terminal sits in the port district north-west of the city, and how you cover that gap — taxi or bus 04 — decides your day. This guide is built from the port association's call schedule, Hokutetsu's new bus timetable (in force from 1 October 2026), the official taxi tariff and each sight's published hours, checked on 30 September 2026.

What Kanazawa is not: a port where you walk off into town. The terminal is a modern building on an industrial harbour, and apart from a small soy-sauce quarter 17 minutes away on foot, everything worth your day starts with a taxi or a bus. It is also not the place for Shirakawa-go on an ordinary call — more on that below.

First: which berth are you at?

Kanazawa has three cruise berths. The port association's schedule names them for every call, and the difference between them is bigger than it looks on the map.

The pattern in the official list is clear, though the port does not publish it as a rule. Muryoji takes almost everything, including Diamond Princess at 290 m. Ohama, about 2 km north, has taken every MSC Bellissima call — at 171,598 tons she is the largest ship here — and one Seabourn Encore call in April when Westerdam had Muryoji. Tonomizu takes the second ship when Muryoji is already busy: for the rest of 2026, that is Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 19 October while Westerdam has Muryoji. On ship days Tonomizu itself is closed to the public.

The terminal at Muryoji is open to everyone, 9:00–21:00, free. On the ground floor are the immigration hall, a tourist-information desk, vending machines, a currency-exchange machine, a post box and free Wi-Fi, plus a display of Ishikawa crafts — Kutani porcelain, Kaga-yuzen, Wajima lacquer and gold-leaf pillars. Upstairs is a covered observation deck and the restaurant Umi no Shokudo Bay Arce (10:00–21:00, closed Mondays, which catches 12 and 19 October). Check your berth in the ship's daily programme the night before.

Getting from the Muryoji cruise terminal into Kanazawa

Two ways in, and the right one depends on the day of the week.

Bus 04 (Hokuriku Railroad, known as Hokutetsu) leaves from stop A, beside the terminal, for Kanazawa Station West exit: 28–35 minutes, ¥310. Pay in cash — the changer takes ¥1,000 notes and coins, not larger notes — with the local ICa card, or by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover or UnionPay card on and off. One contactless card can pay for the whole party if you tell the driver before tapping. Suica, ICOCA and PASMO do not work on this bus.

Read the gaps: no weekday bus leaves the terminal between 07:25 and 10:10, which is exactly when most ships arrive, and at weekends the last bus back is 15:45. Those two facts are why most of the model days below start or end with a taxi.

Taxi fares are our estimates from map routing and the official Kanazawa tariff — ¥700 for the first 1.22 km, then ¥100 per 226 m — and leave out the time charge in traffic, so treat them as the least you will pay. The terminal has 20 taxi bays; whether cabs wait for every call is not published. Hiring a taxi by time costs ¥4,350 per 30 minutes.

In town: the Loop Bus

The Castle Town Kanazawa Loop Bus leaves from the station's East exit, stop 7, and is the only Hokutetsu bus that takes Suica-type cards (as well as cash, ICa and contactless cards). Each ride is ¥220; a one-day pass is ¥800, sold at the Hokutetsu Ticket Center by West-exit stop 4 or the East-exit information desk, not on the bus. The pass zone map suggests the cruise terminal is outside it, so do not count on it for bus 04 — ask at the ticket centre. The pass also takes ¥50 off Ochaya Shima and ¥100 off Kaikaro.

  • Right loop, every 15 minutes, 8:30–18:00: Omicho 5 min → Hashiba-cho (Higashi Chaya) 12 → Kenrokuen-shita / castle 18 → Hirosaka / 21st Century Museum 21 → Korinbo 24 → Omicho 28.
  • Left loop, every 20 minutes, 8:38–17:58: Omicho 6 → Korinbo 10 → Hirokoji (Nishi Chaya) 15 → Hirosaka 23 → Kenrokuen-shita 27 → Hashiba-cho 30 → Omicho 32.

In short: the right loop is the fast way to the garden, the left loop the fast way from the garden to Higashi Chaya.

From Ohama

Plan on taxis. The nearest stop, Komatsu Kanazawa Factory, is a commuter stop (¥430 to the station, 30–35 minutes): on weekdays the only midday bus towards the station leaves at 12:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays nothing leaves before 16:20. How far it is to walk from the quay has not been published.

Ships sometimes run their own shuttle from Ohama, but the port association and terminal publish nothing about one — look for it in the daily programme and price it against a shared taxi. For more on what to do in the first minutes off the ship, see The First Ten Minutes Ashore.

Kanazawa port to Shirakawa-go: what is actually possible

Shirakawa-go, the thatched gassho-zukuri village in the mountains, is the day trip everyone asks about. It is possible from a Kanazawa call, but only on a long one, and only instead of Kanazawa itself.

  • Highway bus. Hokutetsu and Nohi buses leave Kanazawa Station West exit, stop 4, and take 1 hour 15 minutes, ¥2,800 each way. Seats must be reserved; sales open one month ahead, online or on +81 76-234-0123. Outbound departures include 8:00, 8:10, 8:40, 9:10, 9:40 and 11:10; buses back include 12:20, 12:40, 13:50 and 15:10.
  • The arithmetic. There is no weekday bus from the terminal before 10:10, so take a taxi to the station (about ¥2,600). On an 08:00–18:00 call: taxi at 08:30, the 9:10 bus (arriving 10:35), the 13:50 back (arriving 15:05), taxi to the ship by about 15:30 — a full hour inside the margin, with over three hours in the village. That is why this guide says 10 hours or more. On a 09:00–18:00 call you would have about an hour and a half in the village for two and a half hours on a bus.
  • By private car. The four-hour private drive (tour 88437P7, below) removes the timetable and the booking risk, at about US$256 each.

We could not confirm how full the buses are on cruise dates. If you go, book the moment sales open.

Kenroku-en: how to do it well

Kenroku-en is open every day. From 16 October to the end of February it opens 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30); from 1 March to 15 October, 7:00–18:00. Every call after 15 October runs on the shorter winter hours. Admission is ¥320 for adults and ¥100 for ages 6–17. Visitors aged 65 and over go in free on showing age ID "issued by a public body"; a foreign passport is not named but is the obvious document to carry. On Culture Day, 3 November, entry is free for everyone — and Diamond Princess is in port that day. The gates take cash, the major credit cards and Suica-type IC cards.

There is a free early-morning entry through two of the gates, but it ends 15 minutes before paid opening, so it is no help to a ship arriving at 8:00 or 9:00. Wheelchairs (manual and electric) are lent free at four gates, Katsurazaka among them; the Kodatsuno side is the flattest, and a barrier-free route map is available. The city tourism association lists free wheelchair loans at the Kanazawa Central Tourist Information Center, the castle, Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi as well.

Give the garden about an hour to an hour and a half; the city publishes no official time. Enter at Katsurazaka, where the taxis drop and which faces the castle, and you can cross straight to Kanazawa Castle Park, whose grounds are free (8:00–17:00 from 16 October). The rebuilt Hishi-yagura turret, Gojikken-nagaya storehouse and Hashizume-mon gate open 9:00–16:30 for ¥320 (free at 65+ with ID), or ¥500 on a combined ticket with the garden. In the Gyokusen'inmaru garden, the Gyokusen-an teahouse serves matcha and a sweet for ¥1,000.

The autumn light-up (free, 18:00–21:00) falls on 7 and 15 November, both call days. Diamond Princess's all-aboard (17:30) comes before it starts, and on MSC Bellissima's 7 November call you would need to be back at Ohama by about 17:30 — so it is not one to plan on.

Higashi Chaya, Omicho and the 21st Century Museum

Higashi Chaya is free to wander; the city suggests about an hour. Two teahouses open their interiors: Ochaya Shima, an Important Cultural Property (9:30–17:30 until November, 9:30–17:00 in winter, ¥500, about 15 minutes), and Kaikaro (10:00–17:00, occasional closures, ¥750). Hakuichi Higashiyama, which created the whole-sheet gold-leaf soft serve, has its shop open 9:00–18:00 and café 9:00–17:00 all year. The soft serve launched at ¥1,189; we could not confirm today's price. For your own gold leaf, Gold Leaf Sakuda runs a workshop from ¥1,760, about an hour, by reservation.

Omicho Market keeps official hours of 9:00–16:00, though each of its more than 170 shops sets its own. It is busiest around November, when crab, yellowtail and shrimp come into season. It is covered, so it doubles as the rain plan. Eateries worth knowing:

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art stands beside Kenroku-en's Mayumizaka side. Its free zone opens 9:00–22:00; the exhibition zone 10:00–18:00 (to 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays). The exhibition zone closes on Mondays (the next weekday after a holiday), and two closures land on cruise calls: Monday 19 October and a special closure on Tuesday 27 October. The underground part of Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool needs an exhibition ticket and a same-day time slot, booked from 9:00 on the museum's site or kiosk, and it is closed 19–30 October for re-installation — eight of the season's 17 calls. The collection show "Walking, Lingering" costs ¥450 (¥360 at 65+) until 18 October. Looking further ahead: the museum closes for renovation from 6 May 2027 until about March 2028.

Nagamachi, the samurai quarter, is 10–15 minutes' walk from Omicho; the city suggests about an hour. The Nomura Samurai Residence (¥550) opens 8:30–16:30 from October to March. Myoryuji, the "Ninja Temple", is shown only by guided tour (about 40 minutes, ¥1,200, cash only, 9:00–16:30, to 16:00 in winter), booked by phone on +81 76-241-0888; English is possible, and pre-school children are not admitted. Nishi Chaya, the smaller teahouse district, is free and three minutes from the Hirokoji Loop Bus stop.

The best things to do in Kanazawa on a port day

Our full list, with the time each takes from the berth, is on the Kanazawa top 10, and ready-made itineraries are on Kanazawa plans. In brief:

  1. Kenroku-en garden — the reason to come; about 4½ hours with transfers.
  2. Higashi Chaya teahouse district — Edo-period lanes and two teahouses you can enter.
  3. A seafood bowl at Omicho — the market lunch, a kilometre from the station.
  4. Kenroku-en with a local guide — the private city walks below will take in the garden; ask for it when you book.
  5. Gold-leaf soft serve — a whole sheet of gold on a cone, at Hakuichi in Higashi Chaya.
  6. Kanazawa Castle Park — free grounds and rebuilt turrets across the road from the garden.
  7. Tea with a machiya master — 70 minutes in a 100-year-old townhouse near Nishi Chaya.
  8. The 21st Century Museum — check the October closures first.
  9. Kutani ware at Kaburaki — the region's painted porcelain, the souvenir with weight.
  10. Gold leaf everything — the gold-leaf shops of Higashiyama and a workshop at Sakuda.

One day in Kanazawa: model days

Garden, teahouses and market: a 10-hour weekday call at Muryoji

Fits 08:00–18:00 or longer on a weekday at Muryoji: Norwegian Jade on 15 October, Westerdam on 19 October, Seabourn Encore on 27 October (07:00–18:00). Shift every time by your arrival.

The three sights that make Kanazawa, in the order the Loop Bus runs them. Times assume an 08:00–18:00 call, so all-aboard about 17:30 and a target of back at the gangway 16:30. The weekday morning has no bus from the terminal between 07:25 and 10:10, so the day starts with a taxi.

  1. 08:30Off the ship. Taxi to Kenroku-en's Katsurazaka gate from the terminal's taxi bays: about 15–20 minutes and from about ¥3,700, shared by your party.
  2. 08:50Kenroku-en (¥320, free at 65+ with ID; open from 7:00 until 15 October, from 8:00 after). Give it about 1½ hours, then leave by the Mayumizaka side.
  3. 10:20Across the road to Kanazawa Castle Park (grounds free), or on the other side to the 21st Century Museum's free zone (from 9:00; the paid exhibitions are closed on 19 and 27 October).
  4. 11:01Loop Bus, left loop, from Hirosaka / 21st Century Museum (departures at :01, :21 and :41) to Hashiba-cho, arriving 11:08. ¥220; Suica works on this bus.
  5. 11:15Higashi Chaya: the lanes, Ochaya Shima teahouse (¥500, 9:30–17:30), and gold-leaf soft serve at Hakuichi Higashiyama (café 9:00–17:00).
  6. 12:48Left loop from Hashiba-cho (:08, :28, :48) to Musashigatsuji / Omicho, arriving 12:50.
  7. 12:50Lunch at Omicho: Morimori Sushi (8:00–16:30), Yamasan Sushi (9:00–16:00) or Kaisendon-ya Hirai (to 15:30, closed Wednesdays). Counters are cash-first.
  8. 14:10Walk to Kanazawa Station, about 1 km and 15 minutes, and through to the West exit, stop 6.
  9. 15:00Bus 04 to the cruise terminal, arriving about 15:30. ¥310 in cash or by contactless card. Fallback: the 15:25, arriving 15:56.
  10. 15:40Back at the gangway, 50 minutes ahead of target. Transport for the day: the ¥3,700 taxi plus ¥750 each in bus fares.

Bus both ways: a 9-hour weekend call at Muryoji

Fits 09:00–18:00 at weekends and on holidays at Muryoji: Diamond Princess on Sunday 15 November. For the 08:00–17:00 Culture Day call on 3 November, see the note.

Weekend buses run from the morning, so you can do the day for ¥1,060 each in fares — but the last bus back from the station leaves at 15:45, and that sets the shape of the day. Times assume 09:00–18:00, all-aboard 17:30, target back at the gangway 16:30.

  1. 09:30Off the ship. The 09:30 bus leaves as you step off, so aim for the 10:20 bus 04 from stop A at the terminal. Wait in the terminal or on its observation deck.
  2. 10:20Bus 04 to Kanazawa Station West, arriving 10:51. ¥310 in cash (¥1,000 notes and coins only) or by contactless card.
  3. 11:00Walk through the station to the East exit, stop 7, and take the Loop Bus, right loop to Kenrokuen-shita, arriving 11:18. ¥220.
  4. 11:20Kenroku-en (8:00–17:00 from 16 October) and the castle park across the road, about 1 hour 25 minutes.
  5. 12:48Right loop from Kenrokuen-shita (:03, :18, :33, :48) round to Musashigatsuji / Omicho, about 10 minutes.
  6. 13:00Lunch at Omicho. Kaisendon-ya Hirai opens 10:30–15:30 at weekends; Morimori Sushi runs 8:00–16:30. The main Morimori branch has no regular closing day.
  7. 14:15Walk to Kanazawa Station West exit, stop 6, about 15 minutes; browse the station's covered concourse if you are early.
  8. 15:00Bus 04 to the terminal, arriving 15:29. The 15:45 is the last bus of the day, arriving 16:14 — your only fallback.
  9. 15:40Back at the gangway, 50 minutes ahead of target. Fares for the day: ¥1,060 each.

Taxis in, taxis out: a 10-hour call at Ohama

Fits MSC Bellissima's 09:00–19:00 calls at Ohama: Sunday 11 October, Tuesday 20 October, Thursday 29 October and Saturday 7 November.

Ohama is a cargo quay with no terminal and no bus worth waiting for, so the day runs on taxis at both ends. If your ship runs a shuttle, use it — none is officially documented, so check the daily programme. Times assume all-aboard 18:30 and a target back at the gangway 17:30.

  1. 09:30Off the ship. Taxi to Kenroku-en, about 10 km, 15–20 minutes and from about ¥4,700. How many taxis wait at Ohama is not published, so ask the ship's tour desk the day before.
  2. 09:50Kenroku-en (¥320, 8:00–17:00 from 16 October; free at 65+ with ID) and a look at the castle gates across the road.
  3. 11:25Loop Bus, left loop, from Kenrokuen-shita to Hashiba-cho, three minutes and ¥220 — or walk the 1.2 km to Higashi Chaya.
  4. 11:30Higashi Chaya: Ochaya Shima (¥500), Kaikaro (¥750), gold-leaf soft serve. Jiyuken's yoshoku lunch is closed on 20 October.
  5. 13:08Left loop from Hashiba-cho to Musashigatsuji / Omicho, arriving 13:10.
  6. 13:10Lunch at Omicho: Omicho Shokudo (10:30–15:00), Morimori Sushi, or a bowl at Hirai (closed Wednesdays, which misses every Bellissima call).
  7. 14:30Walk 10–15 minutes to Nagamachi, the samurai quarter, and the Nomura Samurai Residence (¥550; to 16:30 from October to March).
  8. 16:30Taxi from Nagamachi or Korinbo back to Ohama, about 8.5–10 km and from about ¥4,000–4,700. Book it at lunchtime rather than hailing at 16:30.
  9. 16:50Back at the gangway, 40 minutes ahead of target. Two taxis come to about ¥8,700, shared by the party.

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), you want to be back at the gangway an hour before that, and the first half hour after arrival goes on getting off. So the time you can actually use is the call length minus about two hours. On weekdays, also remember the bus gap after 07:25; at weekends, the 15:45 last bus.

The calls from October to mid-November 2026 run from 7 to 16 hours, and 9–10 hours is the commonest length (9 of 17). The one afternoon call is Costa Serena, 14:00–23:00 on Wednesday 14 October: off at about 14:30, taxi to Kenroku-en (still on summer hours that day: last entry 17:30, closing 18:00), Higashi Chaya as the shops close around 17:30–18:00, dinner at Omicho Shokudo (from 17:00), and the 18:13 bus 04 back or a taxi (about ¥2,600) after it. Mitsui Ocean Sakura's two-hour call on 22 October is the end of a round trip, not a sightseeing stop. Silver Moon's 16 hours on 12 October is the one call with time for everything. The full list is on cruises to Kanazawa.

Tours worth booking, by how many hours you have

Every pick opens our own page first — what the operator actually includes, who should skip it, and which upcoming Kanazawa calls it fits. Prices are the operator's "from" price as of 26 Sep 2026.

Tours are booked through Viator (a Tripadvisor company). If you book, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend — which is why each tour page has a "think twice" note.

About the return to the ship. None of the eight Kanazawa tours on Viator mentions cruise ships at all, and none promises in writing to return you in time. None lists the cruise port as a meeting point either: they meet at Kanazawa Station, at hotels, or at the venue. So you control the return. Tell your guide the all-aboard time when you meet, agree to finish somewhere a taxi can reach, and keep the hour's margin. From the station a taxi to Muryoji is about 15 minutes; to Ohama, about 20. More on the trade-offs in Ship tour, private guide or DIY, and every guided option is on Kanazawa guided tours.

Money, cards and the practical stuff

Kanazawa's sights take cards; its buses take contactless cards but not Suica; its market counters prefer cash.

The terminal has a currency-exchange machine; no ATM is listed there. The nearest cash machines are at the Kanazawa Ono post office, about 880 m from the terminal (weekday hours), and a 7-Eleven about 1.4 km away; at Ohama the nearest is Awagasaki post office, about 1.5 km. 7-Eleven and Japan Post machines generally take foreign cards, and Kanazawa Station has plenty. Do not tip: Japan's national tourism board says tipping is not customary in restaurants, cafés, taxis or hotels, though a private guide used to overseas customs may accept one. The Kanazawa Station Tourist Information Center, inside the station, is open 8:30–20:00 every day.

Closed days worth checking against your date.

  • Kaisendon-ya Hirai at Omicho and Yamato Soy Sauce & Miso in Ono close on Wednesdays: 14, 21 and 28 October and 4 November.
  • Restaurant Jiyuken, the old yoshoku house in Higashiyama (lunch 11:30–15:30), is closed on 19, 20 and 27 October.
  • The Fureai-kan branch of Morimori Sushi closes on Tuesdays: 20 and 27 October and 3 November. The main Omicho branch stays open.
  • The 21st Century Museum's exhibition zone is closed on 19 and 27 October, and the terminal's restaurant on Mondays (12 and 19 October).

The terminal also rents small electric vehicles on ship days until 15 November (¥3,000 for three hours), but only to holders of a Japanese driving licence.

When to go: seasons and crowds

  • October is the kind month: mean highs of 21.8 °C and 177 mm of rain. Kenroku-en switches to its 8:00–17:00 hours on the 16th.
  • November is the wettest month of the cruise season — 250.8 mm on average, with 5.3 thunder days as Kanazawa's winter thunder begins — and highs of 15.9 °C. Pack a waterproof. It is also Omicho's busiest month, as the winter seafood arrives; the crab season's opening date should be checked for your year.
  • Spring. Cherry blossom in Kanazawa normally opens around 3 April and reaches full bloom around 8 April (29 March and 3 April in 2026). April 2026 had 15 cruise calls.
  • Summer peaks at 31.3 °C in August; July and September are wet months, and September sees the most typhoon approaches.
  • Winter touches. From 1 November the yukitsuri snow ropes go up over Kenroku-en's pines (installation runs to mid-December, and they stay until early March), and the Nagamachi walls get their straw komo-gake mats from early November. The city tourism association puts autumn leaves at late November to early December — just after the published schedule ends.
  • Rain plan: Omicho is covered, the 21st Century Museum's free zone is indoors (check the closure dates), a gold-leaf workshop at Sakuda takes about an hour, and Kanazawa Station's concourse is covered. See the rainy-day plan for every port.

The published schedule currently ends with Diamond Princess on 15 November 2026. Calls from December and for 2027 have not yet been published by the port association; this guide will add them when they are.

Most likely you will dock at Tonomizu (Tomizu) Wharf. The port's 2026 schedule (as of 8 September 2026) puts 58 of 74 calls at the Muryoji cruise terminal, 8 at Tonomizu and 8 at Ohama, where MSC Bellissima ties up at a cargo quay with no terminal. Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Tapping a Suica or ICOCA card on the port bus. Hokutetsu route buses, including bus 04 to the port, do not accept national IC cards. Pay cash (the changer takes ¥1,000 notes and coins, not ¥5,000 or ¥10,000), the local ICa card, or a contactless credit card. Only the Loop Bus takes Suica.
  2. Walking out on a weekday morning expecting a bus. On weekdays the terminal has a 07:25 departure and then nothing until 10:10. On an 08:00 arrival, take a taxi or accept two hours lost.
  3. Missing the weekend last bus. At weekends and on holidays the last bus from Kanazawa Station back to the port leaves at 15:45. At Muryoji that catches 12 and 17 October and 3 and 15 November. After it, a taxi from the station costs from about ¥2,600.
  4. Planning public transport from Ohama. The nearest stop is a commuter stop with one weekday midday departure (12:30) and nothing at weekends or on holidays before 16:20. At Ohama, budget for taxis both ways unless your ship announces a shuttle.
  5. Assuming there is a shuttle. Neither the port association nor the terminal describes one; both list only the public bus and taxis. Some ships may run their own — check the daily programme, and have the bus times as your plan B.
  6. Queuing for the Swimming Pool without a time slot. The underground part of Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool needs an exhibition ticket plus a same-day time slot, booked from 9:00 on the web or at the kiosk. It is closed 19–30 October, and the exhibition zone is closed on Mondays (and on Tuesday 27 October).
  7. Following old advice. One long-standing cruise-port page still says the Loop Bus pass costs ¥600 and that you will most likely dock at Tonomizu. The pass is ¥800, and 77% of 2026 calls used Muryoji.
  8. Leaving your passport on the ship at 65 or over. Kenroku-en and the castle buildings are free from 65, but only with ID issued by a public body. The rules do not name foreign passports, but a passport is the ID to carry.

Quick answers

Kanazawa cruise port questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Kanazawa?

Most at Muryoji Wharf, where the Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal opened in June 2020: 12 of the 17 calls from October to mid-November 2026. MSC Bellissima, the largest ship, uses Ohama Wharf, a cargo quay about 2 km north with no terminal building (4 calls). Tonomizu Wharf, across the basin from the terminal, takes a second ship when Muryoji is busy (1 call, Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 19 October).

Is there a shuttle bus from the Kanazawa cruise terminal?

No official source describes one. The port association and the terminal list only public bus 04 and taxis. Some ships may arrange their own — check the daily programme. The terminal has a bus apron for 80 coaches, so ship shuttles and tours can use it.

How do I get from the Kanazawa cruise port to Kenroku-en?

Fastest: a taxi from the terminal, about 15–20 minutes and from about ¥3,700 (from Ohama, about ¥4,700). By public transport: bus 04 to Kanazawa Station West (28–35 minutes, ¥310), walk through to the East exit, then the Loop Bus right loop to Kenrokuen-shita (18 minutes, ¥220). Allow 60–75 minutes door to door.

Can I use Suica on the Kanazawa port bus?

No. Hokutetsu route buses, including bus 04 between the cruise terminal and Kanazawa Station, do not take Suica, ICOCA, PASMO or other national IC cards. They take cash, the local ICa card, and contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover and UnionPay cards; one card can pay for several people if you tell the driver first. The Castle Town Loop Bus in the centre does take Suica.

What time is the last bus back to the Kanazawa cruise terminal?

From Kanazawa Station West exit, stop 6: 18:13 on weekdays and 15:45 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (arriving 16:14), on the timetable in force from 1 October 2026. On weekdays there is also a gap between 15:25 and 17:15. If you miss it, a taxi from the station takes about 15 minutes and costs from about ¥2,600.

How much is a taxi from the Kanazawa cruise port?

On the official Kanazawa tariff (¥700 for the first 1.22 km, then ¥100 per 226 m), from the Muryoji terminal: about ¥2,600 to Kanazawa Station, ¥2,900 to Omicho, ¥3,400 to Higashi Chaya and ¥3,700 to Kenroku-en. From Ohama, add about ¥1,000. These are our distance-only estimates; traffic adds to them. A taxi can also be hired by time at ¥4,350 per 30 minutes, which a party of four may find worth pricing against two one-way fares.

Can you walk from the Kanazawa cruise terminal into town?

No: the city centre is 7–8 km away and Kenroku-en about 6.6 km in a straight line, so take bus 04 or a taxi. The one walk is the Ono soy-sauce quarter, 17 minutes (about 1.3 km): Yamato Soy Sauce & Miso is free to visit, 10:00–17:00, closed Wednesdays. The terminal itself is open to all, 9:00–21:00, with a tourist-information desk, a currency-exchange machine, free Wi-Fi, an observation deck and the restaurant Bay Arce (closed Mondays).

Can I see Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya and Omicho in one port day?

Yes on a call of about 8 hours or more: they are within about a kilometre of each other and linked by the Loop Bus. On a weekday 08:00 arrival, take a taxi in (about ¥3,700) because the next bus is 10:10; come back on bus 04. On a 6-hour call, do Kenroku-en and Omicho only.

Can I visit Shirakawa-go from the Kanazawa cruise port?

Only on a call of about 10 hours or more, and only instead of Kanazawa. The highway bus from Kanazawa Station West exit, stop 4, takes 1 hour 15 minutes and costs ¥2,800 each way, with seats reserved in advance (sales open a month ahead). With a taxi to the station, a 09:10 bus and the 13:50 back, you get over three hours in the village. The private car tour 88437P7 is the booked alternative.

What are Kenroku-en's opening hours and price?

8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30) from 16 October to the end of February; 7:00–18:00 from 1 March to 15 October. Adults ¥320, ages 6–17 ¥100, free at 65 and over with official ID, and free for everyone on 3 November. It takes cash, cards and Suica-type IC cards. Allow an hour to an hour and a half, plus Kanazawa Castle Park across the road, whose grounds are free.

Is the 21st Century Museum open when my ship is in?

The exhibition zone closes on Mondays (or the next weekday after a holiday), which hits 19 October; 27 October is a special closure. The free zone stays open. The Swimming Pool's underground room is shut 19–30 October. From 6 May 2027 the whole museum closes for renovation until about March 2028. The exhibition zone opens 10:00–18:00; the free zone 9:00–22:00.

Do I need cash in Kanazawa?

Some. Bus 04 takes contactless cards but not Suica; Kenroku-en and the castle take cards; but Omicho counters are cash-first and Myoryuji (the Ninja Temple) is cash only. The terminal has a currency-exchange machine but no ATM is listed there; the nearest are the Ono post office (about 880 m) and a 7-Eleven (about 1.4 km). Kanazawa Station has plenty. No tips: Japan's tourism board says tipping is not customary in restaurants or taxis, though a private guide may accept one.

What is the best tour from the Kanazawa cruise port?

For a 9–10-hour call, the private half-day with a local guide (5574685P2, 130 reviews at 5.0), which meets inside Kanazawa Station. For 10 hours or more, the private full day (5571420P3) with entries and local transport included. For a short call, the 70-minute machiya tea ceremony (5612540P3). None meets at the port or promises in writing to return you to the ship.

Which cruise ships call at Kanazawa in 2026?

Calls from December 2026 and for 2027 are not yet published.

How do I get into Kanazawa from Ohama Wharf?

By taxi: about 15 minutes and from about ¥3,700 to Kanazawa Station, ¥4,000 to Omicho, ¥4,100 to Higashi Chaya and ¥4,700 to Kenroku-en. Ohama, MSC Bellissima's berth, is a cargo quay with no terminal, and the nearest bus stop, Komatsu Kanazawa Factory, has one weekday midday bus to the station (12:30) and nothing before 16:20 at weekends. How many taxis wait is not published: ask the ship's tour desk, book the return taxi at lunchtime, and take a ship shuttle if one is offered.

How do I get from the Kanazawa cruise port to Omicho Market, and when is it open?

By taxi from the Muryoji terminal, about 10–15 minutes and from about ¥2,900 (from Ohama, about ¥4,000). By bus, take bus 04 to Kanazawa Station (28–35 minutes, ¥310), then walk about 1 km, 15 minutes, or ride the Loop Bus one stop (¥220). Omicho's official hours are 9:00–16:00, but each of its more than 170 shops sets its own: Morimori Sushi runs 8:00–16:30, and Kaisendon-ya Hirai closes on Wednesdays. Bring cash for the counters.

How do I get from the Kanazawa cruise port to Higashi Chaya?

By taxi from the Muryoji terminal, about 15 minutes and from about ¥3,400 (from Ohama, about ¥4,100). By bus, take bus 04 to Kanazawa Station (¥310), then the Loop Bus right loop from East exit stop 7 to Hashiba-cho, 12 minutes and ¥220. From Kenroku-en it is about 1.2 km on foot. The lanes are free; Ochaya Shima (¥500) and Kaikaro (¥750) open their interiors, and the city suggests about an hour for the district.

What can I do in Kanazawa on a short port call?

On a 4-hour call you have about 2 usable hours: walk 17 minutes to the Ono soy-sauce quarter, or take a taxi to Omicho (about ¥2,900 each way) for one seafood bowl. On a 6-hour call, about 4 hours: taxi to Kenroku-en (about ¥3,700), the garden and the free castle park, the Loop Bus to Omicho for lunch, and bus 04 back. Higashi Chaya as well needs about 8 hours. Plan to be at the gangway an hour before all-aboard.

How does the Kanazawa Loop Bus work, and is the day pass worth it?

The Castle Town Loop Bus leaves Kanazawa Station East exit, stop 7: the right loop every 15 minutes (8:30–18:00), the left loop every 20 minutes. Each ride is ¥220 and the one-day pass ¥800, so the pass pays from the fourth ride. Buy it at the Hokutetsu Ticket Center by West-exit stop 4 or the East-exit information desk, not on the bus. The bus takes Suica, cash and contactless cards. Do not count on the pass for bus 04 to the port; ask when you buy.

What is the weather like in Kanazawa in October and November?

October averages highs of 21.8 °C and 177 mm of rain; November 15.9 °C and 250.8 mm, the wettest month of the cruise season, as the winter thunder begins. Pack a waterproof either way. From 1 November the yukitsuri snow ropes go up over the pines of Kenroku-en (installation runs to mid-December; they stay until early March), and the city tourism association puts autumn leaves at late November to early December. In spring, cherry blossom normally opens around 3 April.

Is Kanazawa manageable with a wheelchair or limited mobility?

Yes, with taxis: about ¥3,700 door to door from the Muryoji terminal to Kenroku-en's Katsurazaka gate, avoiding the bus and station transfer. Kenroku-en lends manual and electric wheelchairs free at four gates, Katsurazaka among them, and its Kodatsuno side is the flattest. The city tourism association also lists free wheelchair loans at the Kanazawa Central Tourist Information Center, Kanazawa Castle, Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi. Of the tours here, only the temari-sushi class (102604P3) is flagged fully wheelchair accessible.

Can you see geisha in Kanazawa on a cruise day?

Not by chance in the street, and not to be photographed without permission. The city tourism association runs a Kanazawa Geisha Experience on designated Saturdays and arranges private group performances at Asanogawa Enyukai Hall and Kenrokutei; check its dates against your call. Without a booking, the nearest you will get is a teahouse interior at Ochaya Shima (¥500) or Kaikaro (¥750) in Higashi Chaya. Wear socks in the teahouses, as the association asks.
