Sakaiminato Cruise Port: The Complete Guide for 2026–27

Sakaiminato gives you two very different days. In town, the Mizuki Shigeru Road — 800 metres of 178 bronze yokai leading to the manga artist's museum — plus a crab or seafood lunch at the fish market. Out of town, Japan's top-ranked garden at the Adachi Museum of Art and the original keep of Matsue Castle. Every call from October to December 2026 docks at the Sakai Yumeminato Terminal, about 15 minutes by taxi from the yokai road, and not walkable. The town fits any call with an hour or two to spare. Adachi alone fits a 9-hour call, by taxi or by train and the museum's free shuttle. Adachi and Matsue together need a car or the 5-hour tour; adding the yokai road as well is tight on 9 hours and comfortable on 10. The one decision is town or gardens.

Mizuki Shigeru Road and the museum

Sakaiminato is the hometown of Mizuki Shigeru, Japan's great drawer of yokai, the folk spirits of rural Japan. The street from the station to his museum is lined with 178 bronze statues of his creatures, and it is flat, free and open at all hours. The museum (¥1,000) takes 30 minutes to an hour.

From the ship Taxi from the Yumeminato Terminal to Sakaiminato Station, about 15 minutes and about ¥2,300. Or walk 20 minutes to the Miho-cho-iriguchi stop for bus 41 (12 minutes, ¥250, IC cards).

The Adachi Museum of Art garden

A garden the museum says has been ranked the best in Japan for 23 consecutive years by the US Journal of Japanese Gardening. You view it through the museum's windows rather than walking in it, so it works in rain. The museum recommends two hours or more.

From the ship About 50 minutes by car each way (the museum's figure), about ¥11,400 by taxi each way. By taxi to Yonago, the limited express to Yasugi and the museum's free shuttle, about 1 hour 35 minutes.

Matsue Castle

One of the twelve castle keeps that survive from the Edo period, black-walled and climbed on steep original stairs in your socks. A visit from the main gate up the keep and back takes 40–50 minutes.

From the ship About 30 minutes by taxi (map-routing estimate), about ¥8,800 each way. By walk, JR and limited express, about 1 hour 40 minutes to Matsue Station.

Why Sakaiminato is worth getting off the ship for

Sakaiminato is a fishing port at the mouth of the Sakai Channel, where Tottori meets Shimane, and it is the hometown of Mizuki Shigeru — the manga artist who spent his life drawing yokai, the ghosts, goblins and household spirits of Japanese folklore. The town has turned his world into its main street: the Mizuki Shigeru Road runs 800 metres from the railway station to his museum, lined with 178 bronze statues of his creatures, Kitaro of GeGeGe no Kitaro and the eyeball father Medama-oyaji among them. It is flat, free, open at all hours and genuinely odd, and it pairs with a lunch from the port that lands more red snow crab than anywhere else in Japan.

The other reason ships call here lies 30–50 minutes inland. The Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi has a garden that the museum says has been ranked Japan's best for 23 consecutive years, and Matsue Castle is one of the twelve keeps that survive from the Edo period. Either fits a typical call; both together need a car or a tour.

What Sakaiminato is not: a port where you step off into town. The cruise terminal sits on reclaimed land south-east of the centre, the yokai road is 6 km away by road, and every plan starts with a taxi, a bus or a walk to one. This guide is built from the terminal's own schedule, the bus and rail timetables, and the museums' and castle's published hours, all checked on 30 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October.

First: which berth are you at?

Sakaiminato has two kinds of cruise berth, and one of them is used by almost everyone.

Who uses itAll 14 calls from October to December 2026Small expedition ships, and second ships on two-ship days

The pattern in the official lists is clear. In 2025, 41 of 47 calls used Yumeminato and all six Showa calls were small expedition ships (Heritage Adventurer and Le Soléal). In 2026, 49 of 59 calls use Yumeminato; the ten Showa calls are expedition ships — Le Soléal, Heritage Adventurer, Le Jacques Cartier, SH Minerva — or a second ship on a busy day, such as Azamara Pursuit on 3 April while Seabourn Encore had the terminal. Small ships use Yumeminato too whenever it is free.

You will read that "smaller ships use Showa Wharf, the largest use Yumeminato". The schedule does not bear that out: 26,000–32,000-ton ships such as Eastern Venus and Mitsui Ocean Fuji all use Yumeminato. Check your berth in the ship's daily programme the night before. Spectators cannot go onto the quay while a ship is in; the terminal's decks and hall are the viewing places.

Getting from the Yumeminato Terminal into Sakaiminato

There is no standing shuttle. The terminal announced a paid shuttle to Sakaiminato Station for one Diamond Princess call in August 2026 and has published nothing for other calls, so ask your ship and have a plan without it. On ship days the terminal's west car park becomes the waiting area for buses and taxis.

Taxi fares are our estimates from the official Tottori tariff for the distance alone; slow traffic adds time charges, so treat them as a floor. Hourly hire is ¥3,300 per 30 minutes for up to four passengers. The tourism association warns that Sakaiminato's taxi fleet is small and asks visitors with fixed times to book ahead; the city lists three local companies.

Bus 41 (Hinomaru, Yonago Station–Sakaiminato Station via Sotohama) is the cheap way in. From Miho-cho-iriguchi to Sakaiminato Station it takes 12 minutes; weekday departures are 8:07, 8:56, 10:11, 10:50, 12:07, 13:47, 15:17 and 17:12, and at weekends 8:04, 8:54, 10:11, 10:46, 12:06, 13:37, 15:16 and 17:07. Back from the station: 9:20, 10:45, 11:36, 12:56, 14:30, 15:50 on weekdays, and about a minute later at weekends. Every Tottori route bus has taken the ten national IC cards (Suica, ICOCA and the rest) since 21 March 2026.

The JR Sakai Line runs roughly hourly, but with gaps: on weekdays no train leaves Sakaiminato between 10:27 and 12:33. Some trains are painted with yokai; which ones is up to JR.

The city's Minatoru on-demand bus costs ¥100, but every ride must be booked by app, LINE or phone, and the app wants a Japanese mobile number. The tourist information centre next to Sakaiminato Station rents e-bikes for ¥3,300 or ¥2,750 a day (9:00–17:00) — a good way to cover the 1.4 km between the market and the museum.

Sakaiminato to the Adachi Museum and Matsue Castle: what is actually possible

The Adachi Museum of Art's dry garden, with the hills behind

Both sights are in Shimane, across the prefecture line. Most cruise pages make them sound either unreachable without a tour or a short hop. The honest version:

  • Adachi by taxi. About 50 minutes each way by the museum's own figure (map routing says 33 without traffic), about ¥11,400 each way. There is no taxi rank at the museum — book the return, or keep the car. It fits a 6-hour call only just; on 8 hours or more it is comfortable.
  • Adachi by train and shuttle. Taxi to Yonago Station, limited express Yakumo to Yasugi (7 minutes), then the museum's free shuttle: about 1 hour 35 minutes door to door and about ¥1,930 in fares plus the taxi. It fits a 09:00–18:00 weekday call with 2 hours 20 minutes at the museum (the third model day below). Without the limited express, the mid-morning local trains to Yasugi are too sparse, and you get under two hours.
  • Matsue by public transport. Walk to Takamatsucho, JR to Yonago and the limited express to Matsue: about 1 hour 40 minutes and ¥770 plus ¥1,290 for the reserved seat — for example Takamatsucho 9:30, Yonago 10:11, the limited express at 10:25, Matsue 10:47. The airport bus from Yonago Kitaro Airport (about 10 minutes by taxi from the terminal) costs ¥1,200 and takes about 45 minutes, but it runs to flight times.
  • Matsue and Adachi together. By car it is terminal to Matsue about 30 minutes (map routing), Matsue to Adachi 26–40 (map routing, and the museum's own figure), Adachi back to the ship 33–50: add 40–50 minutes at the castle and two hours at Adachi and you have about five hours. The semi-private tour below does exactly this in five hours. By public transport the pair does not fit a 9-hour call.
  • All three — Matsue, Adachi and the yokai road. About 6½–7 hours by car (our estimate). It fits a 10-hour call comfortably and a 9-hour call only with up to 30 minutes of slack.
  • Yuushien, the garden on Daikonshima island, is the easy extra: about 20 minutes by taxi (map-routing estimate, about ¥3,900 each way from the tariff), ¥1,000 for adults, with hours and fees that change with the season and evening events. The 8-hour garden tour pairs it with Adachi.
  • Izumo Taisha, the great shrine, is about 65 minutes each way by road (map-routing estimate, without traffic). The Japan Tourism Agency promotes it from this port, but it is a full day by private car and leaves room for little else.

The Mizuki Shigeru Road and museum: how to do them well

The Mizuki Shigeru Museum at the end of the yokai road

The road opened in 1993 and runs about 800 m from Sakaiminato Station to the museum. The museum says the walk itself takes 10–15 minutes; with 178 statues to find, the Yokai Shrine, Kappa Spring and the shops, allow about an hour at a browsing pace. It is always open and free. From sunset to 22:00 the statues are lit and yokai shadows are projected on the pavement — lovely, but no call in the published schedule leaves late enough to see it with a sensible margin.

The Mizuki Shigeru Museum opens 9:30–17:00 every day of the year (last entry 16:30). Adults pay ¥1,000, junior and senior high-school students ¥500, elementary pupils ¥300; there is no senior concession. Tickets are sold at the window and online, and the window takes credit cards, e-money and QR payment. The museum puts a visit at 30 minutes to an hour, and there is no re-entry. A free smartphone audio guide in English (also Chinese and Korean) covers the galleries. There are no coin lockers, but a cloakroom takes large bags; wheelchairs are on loan and there are three accessible toilets. You may photograph everything except the original art in the special-exhibition room, which closes for a change of display from 5 to 9 October 2026 — no cruise call is affected. The museum warns of ticket queues at busy times; the first hour after opening is the quiet one.

The road starts at the station, where the tourist information centre is on the ground floor of Minato Sakai Koryukan, about 90 m away. Walking from the station end means you finish at the museum, 1.4 km from the fish market — the natural order if you plan to lunch there.

The Adachi Museum of Art: how to do it well

The museum opens 9:00–17:00 from October to March (17:30 from April to September), every day, with no last-entry time — everything closes at closing time. Adults pay ¥2,500, university students ¥2,000, high-school students ¥1,000, and younger children ¥500; there is no senior concession. The entrance, cafés, tea room and shop take Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners and JCB.

The garden is about 50,000 tsubo (roughly 165,000 m²) including the borrowed hillside, and you see it from inside the building, through its windows and from its verandas — you cannot walk in it. That makes it the best rain plan in the region. The museum recommends two hours or more; the English audio guide costs ¥600 (limited numbers, no booking). There is a café with beef curry and light meals and a tea room serving matcha. Coin lockers are free (the ¥100 comes back), there are seven loan wheelchairs, and lifts and accessible toilets serve both buildings; everything except one small gallery is reachable by wheelchair.

Closure days to check against your call: the New Wing closes for changeovers on 20–23 October and 16–17 November 2026, which catches Norwegian Jade on 20 October, Eastern Venus on 23 October and Diamond Princess on 16 November. The garden, Main Building and Rosanjin Hall stay open.

The free shuttle runs daily from JR Yasugi Station, about 20 minutes each way, with 25 seats on a first-come basis and no reservations. The stop is 15 m to the right as you leave the station. Useful departures from Yasugi: 9:50, 10:15, 10:45, 11:05, 11:30. Back from the museum: 12:30, 12:55, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00. For the return you need a numbered ticket for each departure, taken at the museum's entrance counter — take it when you arrive. Large suitcases can be refused on busy days. The museum quotes a taxi from Yasugi Station at about ¥3,500, and from Yonago Station about ¥7,000.

Matsue Castle: tickets, stairs and timing

Matsue Castle's keep above the stone walls

The keep opens 8:30–17:00 from October to March (last entry 16:30) and 8:30–18:00 from April to September; the grounds are free and open from 8:00. Since 1 July 2026 adults pay ¥1,200, a rise to fund repairs; elementary and junior-high pupils are free, and there is no senior concession. The Honmaru ticket office takes credit cards, transit IC cards and most other cashless payment.

You take your shoes off at the entrance and carry them in a bag. The stairs inside are steep, and there is no lift and no toilet in the keep. A wheelchair can reach the upper Ninomaru level by a gravel detour, but not the keep. The castle's own estimate for a visit from the main gate, up the keep and back is 40–50 minutes. Horikawa moat boats leave from three piers around the castle.

The keep enters a long repair — the "Reiwa great repair" — from June 2027 to December 2030, under a temporary roof, and for parts of that time it cannot be climbed. It stays open as normal until May 2027, so none of the calls published so far is affected.

The best things to do in Sakaiminato on a port day

Our full list, with the time each needs from the ship, is on the Sakaiminato top 10. In brief:

  1. Mizuki Shigeru Road — 178 bronze yokai over 800 m, about an hour on foot at a browsing pace.
  2. Mizuki Shigeru Museum — ¥1,000, 30–60 minutes, free English audio guide.
  3. A crab or seafood bowl at the market — Kaiyoutei at the direct-sales centre, 10:30–16:00, closed Tuesdays.
  4. Whole crab, boiled to order — the direct-sales centre's stalls, open from about 8:00.
  5. The Adachi Museum of Art gardens — ¥2,500 and two hours or more; about 50 minutes each way by car.
  6. Matsue Castle — an original keep, ¥1,200, 40–50 minutes inside.
  7. Yokai sweets: the eyeball daddy — eyeball-father sweets and yokai snacks along the road; the souvenirs are half the fun.
  8. Matsue Castle and the Adachi gardens, semi-private — the five-hour tour from the cruise terminal.
  9. The Sakai Channel and lighthouse walk — the waterfront towards the Showa North green space at the town's eastern tip, where dolphins are sometimes seen.
  10. Nodoguro, the blackthroat seaperch — the rich white fish of this coast; look for it on seafood-restaurant menus.

For a guided version, see guided options in Sakaiminato; for ready-made plans by call length, Sakaiminato plans.

One day in Sakaiminato: model days

The yokai road and a market lunch: a 9-hour call from 09:00

Fits the 09:00–18:00 calls at Yumeminato (Eastern Venus ×4, Mitsui Ocean Sakura), 08:00–17:00 (Westerdam), Mitsui Ocean Fuji's 09:00–17:00 on 2 December and Spectrum of the Seas' 09:00–19:00. Weekday and weekend buses both fit.

The whole town at an unhurried pace, by bus in and taxi out. Times assume a 09:00–18:00 call, all-aboard 17:30, target back at the gangway 16:30. It gets you back 1½–2 hours early, which is the margin that lets you linger.

  1. 09:30Off the ship. Walk about 20 minutes to the Miho-cho-iriguchi bus stop. Or take a taxi straight to Sakaiminato Station (about 15 minutes, about ¥2,300), or your ship's shuttle if it runs one.
  2. 10:11Bus 41 towards Sakaiminato Station, arriving 10:23. ¥250; IC cards work. The 10:11 runs on weekdays and weekends alike.
  3. 10:25The Mizuki Shigeru Road from the station end: 178 bronze yokai over 800 m, the Yokai Shrine and Kappa Spring. The tourist information centre is beside the station, in Minato Sakai Koryukan.
  4. 11:30Mizuki Shigeru Museum at the far end: ¥1,000, cards accepted, 30–60 minutes. Download the free English smartphone audio guide.
  5. 12:40Taxi to the Sakaiminato direct-sales centre at the fish market, about ¥900. Or walk it in about 20 minutes, flat.
  6. 12:50Seafood bowl at Kaiyoutei on the centre's premises (10:30–16:00, last order 15:00, closed Tuesdays), then the stalls — red snow crab most of the year.
  7. 14:20Taxi back to the ship, about 7 minutes and about ¥1,700. Book it while you eat. Bus alternative: walk 30 minutes to the station for the 14:30 bus (14:31 at weekends) to Miho-cho-iriguchi, then 20 minutes on foot.
  8. 14:30Back at the gangway, about two hours ahead of the 16:30 target. Yumeminato Tower next door and the Tairyo Ichiba Nakaura seafood market, 470 m away, fill the spare time on foot.

Market first, museum at opening: a 9-hour call from 07:00

Fits the 07:00–16:00 calls (Diamond Princess on 15 October, 4 and 16 November) and Norwegian Jade's 07:00 arrivals. Weekday bus times.

An early start suits Sakaiminato: the fish market is busiest in the morning and the museum opens at 9:30. Times assume 07:00–16:00, all-aboard 15:30, target back at the gangway 14:30. Book the first taxi the day before — the town's fleet is small.

  1. 07:30Off the ship. Taxi to the direct-sales centre at the fish market, about 7 minutes and about ¥1,700.
  2. 08:00The stalls open from about 8:00 with the morning's crab and catch. The Showa North green space at the town's eastern tip is where the tourism association says dolphins are sometimes seen in the channel.
  3. 09:00Walk 1.4 km west to the museum, about 20 minutes and flat, or take a short taxi.
  4. 09:30Mizuki Shigeru Museum from opening, before any ticket queue: ¥1,000, 30–60 minutes.
  5. 10:30The Mizuki Shigeru Road from the museum back towards the station: statues, yokai sweets, the shops.
  6. 11:45Lunch. Izumi, on a side street off the road (11:00–14:00), is closed on Thursdays — so on 15 October take a taxi back to Kaiyoutei at the market instead (open from 10:30).
  7. 12:56Bus 41 from Sakaiminato Station to Miho-cho-iriguchi (13:06), then 20 minutes on foot. Or a taxi, about 15 minutes and ¥2,300.
  8. 13:30Back at the gangway, about an hour ahead of the 14:30 target.

The Adachi garden by train: a 9-hour weekday call from 09:00

Fits 09:00–18:00 and longer on a weekday: Eastern Venus on 12 November and 7 December, Spectrum of the Seas on 26 October. On 23 October the New Wing is closed but the garden is open.

Adachi without a car, using the limited express and the museum's free shuttle from Yasugi. It gives you 2 hours 20 minutes at the museum, just over its recommended two. Times assume 09:00–18:00, all-aboard 17:30, target back at the gangway 16:30.

  1. 09:30Off the ship. Taxi to JR Yonago Station, about 20 minutes and about ¥5,700 per car (our estimate from the official tariff).
  2. 10:25Limited express Yakumo 3 to Yasugi, arriving 10:32: ¥200 fare plus ¥1,290 for the reserved seat.
  3. 10:45The museum's free shuttle from the stop 15 m to the right of Yasugi Station, arriving 11:05. First come, 25 seats, no bookings.
  4. 11:05Adachi Museum of Art, ¥2,500, cards accepted. At the entrance counter, take a numbered ticket for the 13:30 return shuttle — you cannot board without one. English audio guide ¥600.
  5. 13:30Shuttle back to Yasugi, arriving 13:50.
  6. 14:06JR local to Yonago, arriving 14:15 (¥200).
  7. 14:40JR Sakai Line to Takamatsucho, arriving 15:22 (¥240).
  8. 15:22Walk to the terminal, about 26–30 minutes.
  9. 15:50Back at the gangway, about 40 minutes ahead of the 16:30 target. For more margin, take a taxi from Yonago at 14:15 instead and be back about 14:40.

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), you want to be back at the gangway an hour before that, and the first half hour after arrival goes on getting off. So the time you can actually use is the call length minus about two hours.

The published schedule runs from 4 October to 12 December 2026: 14 calls, eight in October, three in November and three in December, all at Yumeminato and none overnight. Nine are 9-hour calls, most in two patterns: 07:00–16:00 (Diamond Princess, three times) and 09:00–18:00 (Eastern Venus four times, Mitsui Ocean Sakura once). The shortest is Mitsui Ocean Fuji on 2 December (09:00–17:00); the longest is Norwegian Jade on 16 October (07:00–18:00). Nothing after 12 December has been published yet. Times change often, and the terminal posts changes on its home page. The full list is on cruise ships calling at Sakaiminato.

Tours worth booking, by how many hours you have

Every pick opens our own page first — what the operator actually includes, who should skip it, and which upcoming Sakaiminato calls it fits. Prices are the operator's "from" price as of 26 Sep 2026.

Tours are booked through Viator (a Tripadvisor company). If you book, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend — which is why each tour page has a "think twice" note.

About the return to the ship. None of the three Sakaiminato tours puts an on-time return to the ship in writing — their listings have no wording about it at all. Only the semi-private tour is built around a cruise call and meets you at the terminal; its description also calls the meeting place the "ferry terminal" — probably the same building, since Yumeminato handles the international ferry too, but confirm with the operator. Tell the guide or driver your all-aboard time when you meet, and agree to be back at the gangway an hour before it. On a 07:00–16:00 call, if the tour starts soon after you get off, it ends around 12:30–13:00, which leaves about an hour and a half for the yokai road by taxi. For more on hiring a car and driver instead, see a car with a driver at Japan's cruise ports.

Cash machines. There is nothing within 1 km of the Yumeminato Terminal: the nearest are a Lawson about 1.24 km away, a 24-hour FamilyMart about 1.46 km, and the Takenouchi post office about 1.51 km (weekdays 9:00–17:00). Treat the terminal as cash-free and bring yen from the ship. In town, a Lawson about 240 m from Sakaiminato Station is open 24 hours, and the Mizuki Road post office, about 300 m away, opens on weekdays. Near the fish market there is a sub-post office about 235 m away, open on weekdays. 7-Eleven and Japan Post machines generally take foreign cards; post offices are closed at weekends, which matters on 4, 12 and 18 October and 12 December.

Where to eat, and when it is closed. The tourism association's list of seafood-bowl restaurants gives the days to watch:

Shinwa's 9:00 opening makes it the early-call breakfast option. Izumi also closes when rough seas keep the boats in. The list dates from 2024, so hours may have shifted; card acceptance at these restaurants was not confirmed. Near the terminal, the Tairyo Ichiba Nakaura seafood market (470 m) and a café in Yumeminato Tower are the only choices on foot.

At the terminal. The building opens 9:00–18:00 and on ship days is open whatever the weekday. It has free Wi-Fi and three loan wheelchairs at the main entrance; its coin lockers are meant for rental-bike users. The Japan Tourism Agency lists tourist information and currency exchange at the port, but not whether they are staffed on every call.

When to go: seasons and crowds

  • October is the best month: mean highs of 22.1 °C and 133.5 mm of rain in the month, and eight of the fourteen published calls. The fisheries festival, the Suisan Matsuri, runs at the fish market on Sunday 11 October (8:00–14:00) — the day before Eastern Venus, so no call sees it.
  • November cools to highs of 16.7 °C. The Adachi Museum says its garden is worth seeing in every season.
  • December averages 11.0 °C with 193 mm of rain and some snow; this coast is wet and windy in winter, with westerly winds. It is also when the tourism association says crab is at its best.
  • Crab. The port lands about 8,000 tonnes of red snow crab a year, around 60% of Japan's catch, in every month except July and August.
  • Typhoons approach the Chugoku region about three times a year, most often in September; October averages 0.3, and November and December none.
  • Rain plan: the Mizuki Shigeru Museum, the direct-sales centre and Yumeminato Tower are indoors, and the Adachi garden is seen from inside. Matsue Castle's keep is indoors, but the approach is open gravel paths. For every port's wet-weather plan, see raining in port?.
  • Crowds: no visitor figures are published for the road or the museum. With one ship in port — the case on every published date — the town is not overrun. For the month-by-month picture across the coast, see when each Japan cruise port is at its best.

Ships dock at Showa Wharf by the town, a flat 10–15 minute walk to the yokai road. The terminal's schedule (updated 22 September 2026) puts all 14 calls from October to December 2026 at the Sakai Yumeminato Terminal, 6.2 km by road from the yokai road; it marks no Showa quay call after 17 September. Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Assuming you dock by the fish market. Older cruise pages say smaller ships use Showa Wharf in town. Every call from October to December 2026 — including 26,000–32,000-ton ships — is at the Yumeminato Terminal, 6 km by road from the yokai road.
  2. Planning to walk into town. Sakaiminato Station is 4 km from the terminal in a straight line and 6.2 km by road. The nearest station, Takamatsucho, is about 30 minutes on foot.
  3. Counting on a free shuttle. The only shuttle to the station on record was a paid one, for a single Diamond Princess call in August 2026. Ask your ship; otherwise budget about ¥2,300 for a taxi.
  4. Expecting taxis to be waiting. The town's taxi fleet is small and the tourism association asks visitors with fixed times to book. At the Adachi Museum there is no taxi rank at all — book the return before you go in.
  5. Missing the Sakai Line's midday gap. On weekdays trains leave Sakaiminato at 10:27 and then not until 12:33. Check the timetable before you plan a train leg around the middle of the day.
  6. Relying on the ¥100 Minatoru bus. The city's on-demand bus must be booked by app, LINE or phone, and the app asks for a Japanese mobile number. It is not a practical first choice for a day visitor.
  7. Planning lunch on the wrong day. Kaiyoutei at the market is closed on Tuesdays (Norwegian Jade, 20 October). Izumi and Shinwa are closed on Thursdays (15 October and 12 November).
  8. Booking Matsue Castle for a wheelchair user. The keep has steep stairs, no lift and no toilets inside, and the castle says it cannot be visited in a wheelchair. Adachi and the Mizuki Shigeru Road are the accessible choices.

Quick answers

Sakaiminato cruise port questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Sakaiminato?

At the Sakai Yumeminato Terminal on Takenouchi South Quay, south-east of town — all 14 calls from October to December 2026 and 49 of 59 in 2026 as a whole. It is 6.2 km by road from Sakaiminato Station and the Mizuki Shigeru Road. The Showa quays, beside the fish market in town, took the other 10 calls in 2026, all small expedition ships or second ships on two-ship days.

How do I get from the Sakaiminato cruise terminal to Mizuki Shigeru Road?

By taxi, about 15 minutes and about ¥2,300 to Sakaiminato Station, where the road begins. Or walk about 20 minutes to the Miho-cho-iriguchi stop and take bus 41 (12 minutes, ¥250, IC cards accepted; weekday departures include 10:11 and 12:07). Or walk about 30 minutes to Takamatsucho and take the JR Sakai Line (10 minutes, ¥190), which runs roughly hourly.

Is there a shuttle bus from the Sakai Yumeminato Terminal?

Not as a standing service. The terminal announced a paid shuttle to Sakaiminato Station for one Diamond Princess call in August 2026 and has published no fare or timetable for other calls. Ask your ship; if nothing runs, take a taxi (about ¥2,300) or bus 41 from a stop 20 minutes' walk away. The city's ¥100 Minatoru on-demand bus must be booked by app, LINE or phone, and the app asks for a Japanese mobile number.

How much is a taxi from the Sakaiminato cruise port?

Estimates from the official Tottori tariff, before any time charges: about ¥2,300 to Sakaiminato Station, ¥1,700 to the fish market, ¥5,700 to Yonago Station, ¥8,800 to Matsue Castle and ¥11,400 to the Adachi Museum, each way. Hourly hire is ¥3,300 per 30 minutes for up to four passengers. Book ahead — the fleet is small.

Can I walk from the cruise terminal into Sakaiminato?

Not realistically. Sakaiminato Station is 6.2 km by road. Within a short walk of the terminal there is only Yumeminato Tower (next door) and the Tairyo Ichiba Nakaura seafood market (470 m). The nearest station, Takamatsucho, is about 30 minutes on foot.

What is there to do in Sakaiminato on a cruise port day?

Two kinds of day. In town, about 15 minutes by taxi from the ship: the free Mizuki Shigeru Road of 178 bronze yokai (about an hour), the Mizuki Shigeru Museum (¥1,000, 30–60 minutes) and a crab or seafood bowl at the fish market's direct-sales centre. Out of town: the Adachi Museum of Art's garden (about 50 minutes by car, ¥2,500) and Matsue Castle (about 30 minutes, ¥1,200). The town fits any call, one inland sight fits a 9-hour call, and both together need a car or the 5-hour tour.

How much time do I need in Sakaiminato?

Subtract about two hours from your call for getting off and for being back an hour before all-aboard. With about 2 usable hours (a 4-hour call), take a taxi to the yokai road. With 4 (a 6-hour call), add the Mizuki Shigeru Museum and a market lunch, or reach the Adachi Museum by taxi only just. With 6–7 (8–9 hours), take the 5-hour Matsue and Adachi tour, or Adachi by train plus the road. With 8 or more (10 hours+), Matsue, Adachi and the road by car.

What can I do for free in Sakaiminato?

Quite a lot. The Mizuki Shigeru Road — 800 m of 178 bronze yokai from Sakaiminato Station to the museum — is free and open at all hours, and lit from sunset to 22:00. Browsing the stalls at the fish market's direct-sales centre costs nothing, and the Showa North green space at the town's eastern tip is where the tourism association says dolphins are sometimes seen. Getting into town is not free: about ¥2,300 by taxi or ¥250 by bus 41. Inland, Matsue Castle's grounds are free; only the keep is ticketed.

What is the Mizuki Shigeru Road, and how many yokai statues are there?

178 bronze statues, according to the Mizuki Shigeru Museum and the Japan Tourism Agency — many older pages say 177. Sakaiminato is the hometown of Mizuki Shigeru, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, and since 1993 the 800 m street from Sakaiminato Station to his museum has been lined with his yokai, the spirits of Japanese folklore, Kitaro among them. It is free and always open; allow about an hour at a browsing pace.

How much is the Mizuki Shigeru Museum, and how long does it take?

Adults ¥1,000; there is no senior discount. It opens 9:30–17:00 every day of the year (last entry 16:30), takes credit cards, e-money and QR payment, and the museum says a visit takes 30 minutes to an hour. A free English audio guide runs on your smartphone, and a cloakroom takes large bags.

Can I visit the Adachi Museum of Art from a cruise ship at Sakaiminato?

Yes, on a typical 9-hour call. By taxi it is about 50 minutes each way and about ¥11,400 each way. By public transport, take a taxi to Yonago, the limited express to Yasugi and the museum's free shuttle — about 1 hour 35 minutes, and it fits a 09:00–18:00 weekday call with 2 hours 20 minutes at the museum. Admission is ¥2,500.

How do I get from the Sakaiminato cruise port to Matsue Castle?

By taxi, about 30 minutes and about ¥8,800 each way (our map-routing and tariff estimates). By public transport, about 1 hour 40 minutes: walk 30 minutes to Takamatsucho Station, take the JR Sakai Line to Yonago and the limited express Yakumo to Matsue, for ¥770 plus ¥1,290 for a reserved seat. The keep costs ¥1,200 and a visit takes 40–50 minutes. The 5-hour semi-private tour from the cruise terminal combines Matsue Castle with the Adachi Museum.

Can I see Matsue Castle and the Adachi Museum in one port day?

By car, yes: the 5-hour semi-private tour from the cruise terminal does both and fits every call. By taxi charter the two plus the Mizuki Shigeru Road take about 6½–7 hours (our estimate) — tight on 9 hours, comfortable on 10. By public transport, adding Matsue to Adachi does not fit a 9-hour call.

Can I visit Izumo Taisha or Yuushien garden from the Sakaiminato cruise port?

Yuushien easily; Izumo Taisha only just. Yuushien, the garden on Daikonshima island, is about 20 minutes by taxi (about ¥3,900 each way, our estimate) and charges adults ¥1,000, with hours that vary by season. Izumo Taisha is about 65 minutes each way by road (map-routing estimate, without traffic) and about ¥21,000 each way by taxi: a full day by private car that leaves room for little else, and not a public-transport trip on a 9-hour call.

What is the best shore excursion from Sakaiminato?

For most calls, the Sakaiminato Semi Private Tour for Cruise Passengers (418296P24): five hours from the cruise terminal to Matsue Castle and the Adachi Museum, both tickets included, from $220 each. It has no reviews yet and puts no return-to-ship promise in writing. You do not need a ship's excursion for the town itself: a taxi (about ¥2,300) or bus 41 (¥250) gets you to the Mizuki Shigeru Road and the fish market.

Is Sakaiminato good for wheelchair users, and is Matsue Castle accessible?

The town, yes; Matsue Castle's keep, no. The cruise terminal lends three wheelchairs, the Mizuki Shigeru Road is flat, and the Mizuki Shigeru Museum lends wheelchairs and has three accessible toilets. The Adachi Museum has lifts and seven loan wheelchairs. Matsue Castle's keep is reached only by steep stairs, with no lift or toilets inside, and the castle says it cannot be visited in a wheelchair; a gravel detour reaches the upper Ninomaru level.

What is at the Sakai Yumeminato cruise terminal?

A waiting hall, indoor and outdoor observation decks, free Wi-Fi, vending machines and three loan wheelchairs at the main entrance. The building opens 9:00–18:00, and on ship days whatever the weekday. There is no cash machine within 1.2 km. Yumeminato Tower, with a café, is next door, and the Tairyo Ichiba Nakaura seafood market is 470 m away. The Japan Tourism Agency lists tourist information and currency exchange at the port, but not whether they are staffed on every call.

Do I need cash in Sakaiminato?

Some. The Mizuki Shigeru Museum, the Adachi Museum and Matsue Castle all take cards, and bus 41 takes IC cards. Carry yen for taxis, market stalls and small restaurants. There is no cash machine within 1.2 km of the cruise terminal; the nearest to the yokai road is a Lawson about 240 m from Sakaiminato Station.

Where can I eat crab or a seafood bowl near the Sakaiminato cruise port?

At the fish market's direct-sales centre, about 7 minutes and about ¥1,700 by taxi from the terminal: Kaiyoutei serves seafood bowls 10:30–16:00 (last order 15:00) and is closed on Tuesdays, and the stalls sell crab from about 8:00. Izumi, off the Mizuki Shigeru Road, opens 11:00–14:00 and closes on Thursdays. On foot from the ship, the only choices are the Tairyo Ichiba Nakaura seafood market (470 m) and a café in Yumeminato Tower. Carry cash for the stalls.

When is crab season in Sakaiminato?

Red snow crab, which the port lands in larger quantities than anywhere else in Japan — about 8,000 tonnes a year, around 60% of the country's catch — is caught in every month except July and August. The tourism association says it is best in winter.

What is the weather like for a Sakaiminato cruise call from October to December?

October is the kindest month, with mean highs of 22.1 °C and about 134 mm of rain. November averages highs of 16.7 °C; December 11.0 °C, with 193 mm of rain, westerly winds and some snow. Typhoons approach the region mostly in September — October averages 0.3 and November and December none. On a wet day the Mizuki Shigeru Museum, the fish market's direct-sales centre and the Adachi garden, which you view from indoors, all still work.

Which cruise ships call at Sakaiminato in 2026?

The terminal lists 59 calls for 2026; the last 14 run from 4 October to 12 December, all at the Yumeminato Terminal. Eastern Venus calls four times, Diamond Princess three times, Norwegian Jade and Mitsui Ocean Fuji twice each, and Westerdam, Mitsui Ocean Sakura and Spectrum of the Seas — the largest, at 169,379 tons — once each. Most are 9-hour calls, 07:00–16:00 or 09:00–18:00. Nothing after 12 December has been published yet.
