What is here

What makes Shimizu: three reasons to get off

Shimizu is the port district of Shizuoka City, on Suruga Bay, with Mt. Fuji across the water on a clear morning. It handles more frozen tuna than any other port in Japan, so lunch is the easy part. Ships berth at Hinode Pier beside the Dream Plaza mall, and the market, the water bus to the Miho pine grove and JR Shimizu Station are all within a waterfront walk.

Where you dock

Where your ship ties up in Shimizu

Tender or alongside
No. Ships tie up at Hinode Pier, usually New No.2 berth; some smaller ships use New No.1. Okitsu, a container berth you cannot walk out of, appears once on the FY2026 list.
At the terminal
The Japan Tourism Agency lists a passenger terminal and a tourist information office at Hinode. Their facilities and hours are not published. Dream Plaza, 10 minutes on foot, has an information counter on 1F.

Your berth in Google Maps

If this is your first Japanese port, everyone goes through face-to-face immigration at the terminal; allow 30 to 60 minutes after the ship clears. What happens at your first Japanese port

On foot

Fish market & Dream Plaza

  1. From Hinode Pier: walk — the market is ~20–25 min along the waterfront (OpenStreetMap foot routing), or take Dream Plaza’s free shuttle bus (10 min walk from the pier; it runs from mid-morning) to JR Shimizu Station, beside it
Bus

Miho pine grove

  1. Walk ~5 min to the "Hatoba·Verkehr Museum" stop
  2. Shizutetsu bus (Miho-Yamanote line) to Miho-Matsubara-iriguchi — ~15 min, then walk to the pines

Fare not verified — pay on board; IC cards accepted · every ~15 min

The scenic water bus to Miho also runs: from the Hinode landing by Dream Plaza hourly 9:55–15:55, about 35–40 min out via Ejiri and 15 min back; last boat from Miho 16:35. ¥1,000 per leg, cash only on board — lovely, no longer the cheap option.

On foot

Shimizu Station

  1. Walk ~30 min — or Dream Plaza’s free shuttle bus to the station (about 10 min; the first bus leaves the station at 9:45, so the first from Dream Plaza is a little later; last from Dream Plaza 22:20)

Free (shuttle)

Tuna and the waterfront, on foot: a 4-hour call

Fits any call of 4–6 hours, or a longer call that started late. No 4-hour call is on the port's list to the end of November 2026, but delays happen. Times assume 13:00–17:00. Shift every time by your arrival.

Two usable hours and no vehicles. Times assume 13:00–17:00, all-aboard 16:30 and a target of back at the gangway by 15:30. Miho and Nihondaira do not fit.

  1. 13:30Off the ship. Look north-east over the bay for Fuji, then turn right along the waterfront towards the market.
  2. 13:55Kashi-no-Ichi, 20–25 minutes on foot. Go into Maguro-kan, the restaurant hall, and order a mixed maguro-don. Carry yen.
  3. 14:45Walk back along the waterfront. If the red free Dream Plaza shuttle is at the JR Shimizu Minato exit, it takes about 10 minutes.
  4. 15:00Dream Plaza: Shimizu Sushi Yokocho, green tea and tuna snacks to take home. Shops open 10:00–20:00.
  5. 15:20Walk back to the pier, 10 minutes, flat.
  6. 15:30Back at the gangway, an hour before all-aboard.
  7. 15:30Back at the gangway by 15:30 — the target for this day, an hour before all-aboard.

Fuji from Nihondaira, then tuna: a 6-hour call

Fits a morning call of 6–8 hours, such as Westerdam on 9 November (07:00–15:00, a Monday). Times assume 08:00–14:00. Shift every time by your arrival.

Four usable hours: one viewpoint and one lunch. Times assume 08:00–14:00, all-aboard 13:30 and a target of back at the gangway by 12:30. Decide at sail-in: if you cannot see the summit, use the note below instead.

  1. 08:00On deck as the ship comes in. Can you see the summit, not just the base? Yes: this plan. No: the cloud plan in the note.
  2. 08:30Off the ship. Taxi to Nihondaira Yume Terrace, about 20 minutes and about ¥3,500. Agree a pickup time with the driver.
  3. 08:50Yume Terrace outdoor gallery, open all day: Fuji, the bay and the port. The building charges ¥100 from 1 October 2026.
  4. 09:40Taxi down to Kashi-no-Ichi, about 20 minutes. Kunozan Toshogu does not fit a 6-hour call.
  5. 10:00Maguro-kan for an early tuna bowl, before the lunch queues. Then browse the fish stalls in Ichiba-kan (9:30–17:30, not Wednesdays).
  6. 11:20Walk the waterfront back towards the pier, 20–25 minutes, with the mountain over your shoulder if it held.
  7. 11:45Dream Plaza for souvenirs, 10 minutes from the ship.
  8. 12:20Back at the gangway, 10 minutes ahead of the target.
  9. 12:30Back at the gangway by 12:30 — the target for this day, an hour before all-aboard.

Fuji + tuna: the 10-hour day

Fits 07:00–17:00, the commonest long pattern: Celebrity Millennium on 28 October and Norwegian Jade on 11, 13 and 29 November. Calls of 10 hours or more make up most of the autumn list. Shift by your arrival, but keep the boat times.

Eight usable hours: Fuji from Nihondaira, Ieyasu's shrine, a tuna lunch and the Miho pines by water bus. Times assume 07:00–17:00, all-aboard 16:30 and a target of back at the gangway by 15:30. The rule: if you cannot see the summit from the deck at sail-in, skip the first four steps. Walk to the market for 10:00 and take the 10:15 or 11:15 boat to Miho instead.

  1. 07:00On deck at sail-in. Summit visible? Go to Nihondaira first; 8:00 is the best hour of the day. Hidden? See the rule above.
  2. 07:30Off the ship. Taxi to Nihondaira Yume Terrace, about 20 minutes, about ¥3,500. Arrange the car on to the market for 10:30.
  3. 07:50Yume Terrace outdoor gallery: Fuji over the bay with your ship in the harbour below. Open all day, even when the building is closed.
  4. 09:00Ropeway down to Kunozan Toshogu (first car 9:10), 5 minutes, 3 minutes' walk from the terrace. The set ticket (return plus shrine) is ¥1,950. The shrine opens at 9:00.
  5. 10:20Ropeway back up. Your taxi to Kashi-no-Ichi, about 20 minutes.
  6. 10:45Maguro-kan for a mixed tuna bowl, then buy the Ejiri–Miho water-bus ticket at the machine by the Maguro-kan 1F lift.
  7. 12:15Water bus from Ejiri, beside the market, to Miho, about 15 minutes, ¥1,000.
  8. 12:30Walk to Miho no Matsubara, allowing about 35 minutes. Walk the pines, the black-sand beach and the Hagoromo pine.
  9. 14:35Water bus from Miho straight to Hinode, 15 minutes, ¥1,000 cash on board. Leave the beach by 13:55.
  10. 14:50Hinode landing, beside Dream Plaza. Souvenirs, then 10 minutes back to the pier.
  11. 15:25Back at the gangway, 5 minutes ahead of the target. The 15:35 boat is your reserve; it lands at 15:50.
  12. 15:30Back at the gangway by 15:30 — the target for this day, an hour before all-aboard.

The rainy-day Shimizu

Wet weather — and if Fuji is hidden, this is the plan. About 4h ashore; ~¥400 pp. Museum ~¥400. Times count from when you step off the ship.

  1. +0:00Walk to Kashi-no-Ichi. 25 minutes along the waterfront (or 5 by taxi in heavy rain); the fish shops close on Wednesdays, the restaurants set their own days
  2. +0:25Maguro-don, mixed cuts. Japan’s leading tuna port, at fishmonger prices
  3. +1:45Verkehr Museum, on the waterfront. The port’s own museum — shipping, the tuna fleet, the harbour’s history. 9:30–16:30, ¥400; closed Mondays (open on holiday Mondays) — on a Monday go straight to Dream Plaza
  4. +2:50S-Pulse Dream Plaza, under cover. Sushi alley, wasabi, green tea, and the local comic character
  5. +3:55Back to the pier. 10 minutes on foot
  6. +4hBack at the gangway, about 4h after you set off.

Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Saving Fuji for the afternoon. Fuji City's record shows the mountain clearest at the 8:00 observation, and cloud builds as the day warms. If the summit is out at sail-in, go to Nihondaira first and eat later.
  2. Paying for a viewpoint when the summit is hidden. A taxi or a tour to Nihondaira on a cloudy morning buys a closer look at the same cloud. Do Miho instead: the pines and the beach work in any weather.
  3. Skipping Kashi-no-Ichi on a Wednesday. Only Ichiba-kan, the fish-retail hall, closes on Wednesdays. The Maguro-kan restaurants set their own hours and have no common closing day, so lunch is on.
  4. Waiting for the last boat from Miho. The 16:35 from Miho is the last of the day, and nothing on the timetable follows it. Plan on the boat before, and carry cash: tickets at Miho are sold on board.
  5. Planning Kunozan Toshogu in early December. The Nihondaira Ropeway is closed from 1 to 21 December 2026 for equipment work. You cannot walk between Nihondaira and Kunozan; the only way up is the long stone stairway from the coast.
  6. Letting the taxi go at Nihondaira. Drivers do not wait at the viewpoint. Agree a pickup time, or keep the car, before you get out.

Festivals you could meet on a port day

  • Shimizu Port Tuna Festival (Maguro Matsuri) 7 Nov 2026 (10:00–16:00) and 8 Nov 2026 (9:00–16:00)Frozen-tuna cutting and sale at the fish market and a −60 °C freezer visit on 8 Nov. No ship calls on either day; Westerdam arrives on 9 Nov.
  • Shimizu Minato Matsuri fireworks August; date set each yearOn the fireworks day the last Miho water-bus loop (trip 7) is cancelled.

Shimizu cruise port questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Shimizu?

At Hinode Pier, usually New No.2 berth, with some smaller ships at New No.1. It is a walkable waterfront: Dream Plaza 10 minutes, the tuna market 20–25. Okitsu, a container berth with shuttle-only access, appears once on the FY2026 list.

Can you walk from the Shimizu cruise terminal into town?

Yes. From Hinode Pier the waterfront is flat: Dream Plaza is 10 minutes, the Verkehr Museum 8, Kashi-no-Ichi 20–25 and JR Shimizu Station 25–35 minutes on foot. Dream Plaza runs a free shuttle to the station, about 10 minutes.

Will I see Mt. Fuji from Shimizu?

On about one day in three. Fuji City's 8:00 observations in 2025 found it fully visible on 136 days: 19 in November, 10 in October, 2 in June. Look from the deck at sail-in; the morning is the best chance.

What should I do in Shimizu if Mt. Fuji is hidden?

Skip Nihondaira and the Fuji tours. Walk to Kashi-no-Ichi for a tuna bowl, take the water bus to the Miho pine grove, and add the Verkehr Museum (closed Mondays) or Dream Plaza.

How do I get from the Shimizu cruise port to Miho no Matsubara?

By water bus from the Hinode landing, 10 minutes' walk from the ship: ¥1,000 a leg, about 35–40 minutes out via Ejiri and 15 back. Boats leave hourly 9:55–15:55; the last leaves Miho at 16:35. Then allow about 35 minutes on foot to the grove.

How do I get from the Shimizu cruise port to Nihondaira?

By taxi, about 20 minutes and about ¥3,500 a car each way. Arrange your return, since drivers do not wait at the top. The Yume Terrace building charges ¥100 from October 2026 and closes on the second Tuesday.

Is the Nihondaira Ropeway to Kunozan Toshogu running?

Not from 1 to 21 December 2026, when it closes for equipment work. Otherwise a return is ¥1,250, or ¥1,950 with shrine admission. You cannot walk between Nihondaira and Kunozan.

Is Kashi-no-Ichi open on Wednesdays?

The restaurants in Maguro-kan are; each sets its own hours. Ichiba-kan, the fish-retail hall, is closed on Wednesdays and otherwise opens 9:30–17:30.

How do I get from the Shimizu cruise port to Shizuoka City and Sunpu Castle?

Walk or take the Dream Plaza shuttle to JR Shimizu, ride the Tokaido Line to Shizuoka (about 10 minutes, ¥240), then walk 15 minutes to the park. Allow about an hour each way. The corner tower and gate (¥200) close on Mondays.

Do I need a tour in Shimizu?

Usually not. The market, Dream Plaza and the Miho water bus are all reached on foot from the pier. Book a tour for the Fuji foothills on a 9-hour morning call, or for the three-sight loop with a group.

Do I need cash in Shimizu?

Yes, some. Tickets at the Miho water-bus landing are sold on board for cash only, and market counters vary. Dream Plaza lists an ATM, but whether it takes foreign cards is not published.

Which cruise ships call at Shimizu in autumn 2026?

The port's list to 29 November 2026 includes Celebrity Millennium, Norwegian Jade, Westerdam, Diamond Princess, Silver Moon, Seabourn Encore and Asuka III. December and 2027 calls are published about a month ahead.

Shimizu in depth: the places, the history, the myths

2,071 words · 11 chapters

Why Shimizu is worth getting off the ship for

Shimizu is the port where Mt. Fuji stands across the bay. On a clear morning the mountain fills the view from the deck as you come in. Nihondaira, on the hill above the harbour, frames it over the water with your ship below.

The second reason is lunch. Shimizu handles more frozen tuna than any other port in Japan, says the national transport ministry. Kashi-no-Ichi, its fish market, is a waterfront walk from the gangway. A bowl of mixed tuna cuts is the normal order there.

The third is Miho no Matsubara, a pine grove on a black-sand spit across the bay. It is part of Mt. Fuji's World Heritage listing because it is the view the woodblock artists painted. A small water bus takes you there from beside Dream Plaza.

This is the one port on Port of Japan where every walking time was measured on foot from the pier. Fares, hours and closing days come from the operators' own pages, checked on 18 October 2026.

First: which berth are you at?

Almost every call uses Hinode Pier. The port committee says cruise ships normally berth at Hinode New No.2. Some smaller ships, such as Silver Moon on 30 October, use New No.1 next to it. For you the two are the same place: the same waterfront, the same walks.

Okitsu is the exception. It is a container terminal where you cannot walk out, so you depend on the ship's shuttle or a taxi. On the port's FY2026 list it appears once. If your daily programme says Okitsu, treat the last shuttle as your deadline.

The free shuttle. Dream Plaza runs red buses between the mall and the JR Shimizu Minato (east) exit, via Shin-Shimizu. The first bus leaves the station at 9:45 and the last leaves Dream Plaza at 22:20. The ride takes about 10 minutes, and wheelchairs and strollers are welcome. Frequency is not published. On some big-ship days the port also runs a shuttle, so check your daily programme.

Miho no Matsubara by water bus

The Miho Hagoromo line runs a loop: Hinode, then Ejiri beside the market, then Miho, then straight back to Hinode. The Hinode ticket office is 2 minutes from Dream Plaza. At Ejiri a ticket machine stands by the lift on Maguro-kan's ground floor. At Miho you pay on board, in cash only.

Ejiri → MihoAbout 15 min¥1,000
Miho → HinodeAbout 15 min¥1,000
Full loopAbout 55 min¥1,800

Boats leave Hinode at 9:55 and then hourly to 15:55. They leave Miho at 10:35 and hourly to 16:35, the last. On the August fireworks day the last loop does not run.

From the Miho landing to the grove, the official Miho site allows about 35 minutes on foot. Walk the pine-lined path to the shore, then along the beach to the Hagoromo pine. The Culture Creation Center by the grove opens 9:00–16:30 every day.

What the timetable means for your call. On a 07:00 arrival, the earliest sensible round trip is out on the 9:55 and back on the 12:35, landing at 12:50. That needs a call of about 7½ hours. On a 13:00 arrival, Miho fits only with the last boat, which leaves you no reserve.

Nihondaira and Kunozan Toshogu

Nihondaira is the tea-covered hill above the port. Its Yume Terrace has an outdoor gallery around the building, open all day, even on closing days. The building charges ¥100 from 1 October 2026 and closes on the second Tuesday of each month and 26–31 December. In autumn 2026 that catches Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 10 November.

Taxi there from the pier: about 20 minutes and about ¥3,500 a car. From the terrace, the ropeway station is 3 minutes on foot.

Kunozan Toshogu is where Tokugawa Ieyasu was first buried, below the plateau on the sea side. The ropeway takes 5 minutes. A return is ¥1,250, or ¥1,950 with shrine admission; adding the museum makes it ¥2,300. The shrine opens 9:00–17:00 all year, with tickets until 16:50. It is ¥700 alone, or ¥1,200 with the museum. From the ropeway the paths are stone steps, with no slopes or lift.

The December closure. The ropeway stops from 1 to 21 December 2026 for equipment renewal. You cannot walk between Nihondaira and Kunozan. The shrine stays open, but only by the long stone stairway from the coast. On those dates, see Nihondaira by taxi and skip the shrine.

Kashi-no-Ichi and the tuna

The market has two halls. Ichiba-kan is the fish-retail hall, open 9:30–17:30 and closed on Wednesdays. Maguro-kan is the restaurant hall, where you eat. Its restaurants set their own hours and the hall has no common closing day. So a Wednesday call still gets lunch.

Order a maguro-don that mixes lean and fatty cuts. Prices are set by each counter and are not published, so carry yen. Go before noon or after 13:00 to miss the lunch queue.

The ministry's 2018 release describes the Ejiri district of Shimizu as Japan's largest handler of frozen tuna. On 8 November 2026 the city's Tuna Festival cuts and sells frozen tuna at the market. No ship is in port that day.

The best things to do in Shimizu on a port day

The full list, with times from the berth, is on the Shimizu top 10. The short version:

  1. Fuji from the deck at sail-in. Free, and statistically the best view you will get.
  2. Maguro bowl at Kashi-no-Ichi: 20–25 minutes on foot.
  3. Miho no Matsubara: by water bus, about 3 hours door to door.
  4. Nihondaira: Fuji over the bay, 20 minutes by taxi.
  5. Kunozan Toshogu: Ieyasu's first shrine, by ropeway (not 1–21 Dec 2026).
  6. Dream Plaza: sushi, tea and tuna snacks, 10 minutes from the ship.
  7. The Verkehr Museum: the port's ships and tuna fleet, ¥400, closed Mondays.
  8. Sunpu Castle: Ieyasu's retirement castle in Shizuoka, an hour each way.

For the odds on the mountain, month by month, read Mt. Fuji From Your Cruise Port.

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure, you want to be at the gangway an hour before that, and the first half hour goes on getting off. So the time you can use is the call length minus about two hours.

Shimizu adds two clocks of its own. The water bus runs to a fixed hourly timetable, so Miho needs the right boats. And Fuji is clearest early, so on a clear morning go to the viewpoint first.

CallUsableWhat fits from Hinode Pier
4 hoursabout 2Kashi-no-Ichi lunch and Dream Plaza on foot. Miho and Nihondaira do not fit.
6 hoursabout 4Nihondaira by taxi plus the market if Fuji shows; the market, the Verkehr Museum and Dream Plaza if it does not.
8 hoursabout 6Miho by water bus (9:55 out, 12:35 back) plus lunch, or Nihondaira, Kunozan and the market, or Sunpu Castle by JR.
10 hours+about 8The Fuji + tuna day: Nihondaira, Kunozan, the market and Miho.
Overnightevening ashoreDo Miho and the market on day one, Nihondaira at 8:00 on day two.

The port's list to 29 November 2026 has 11 calls after 27 October. Most are 9 hours or longer, typically 07:00–17:00. The exceptions: Westerdam on 9 November leaves at 15:00, and Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 10 November arrives at 10:00. The full table is on cruises to Shimizu.

Tour or on your own? On your own, for most people. Everything in the first half of this guide is on foot or by water bus from Hinode Pier. Book a tour for the Fuji foothills, which need a car and a 9-hour morning call. A group of six or more might book the private bus to link Nihondaira, Kunozan and Miho.

About getting back. The Fuji short tour's operator says it returns you at least 2.5 hours before departure. The other listings here make no written promise about the return. Tell your guide your all-aboard time when you meet, and agree to be at the gangway an hour before it. Read A Car With a Driver at Japan's Cruise Ports for the comparison, and see every option on guided tours from Shimizu.

When to go: Fuji, seasons and rain

Fuji City has recorded the mountain three times a day since 1990, from its city hall on the same bay. These are its 2025 counts at the 8:00 observation, the best hour of the day.

  • November to February is the window. In 2025, November and December each had 19 fully visible mornings.
  • June to August is the floor. Plan the day around tuna and Miho, and treat Fuji as a bonus.
  • Rain plan: Maguro-kan, Dream Plaza and the Verkehr Museum are all indoors and within 25 minutes' walk. The water bus runs in light rain, but Miho is open-air.
  • Festivals: the Tuna Festival is on 7–8 November 2026, with no ship in port.

Kunozan Toshogu costs about ¥500, and you can walk down from Nihondaira.Shrine admission is ¥700, or ¥1,200 with the museum, 9:00–17:00 all year with tickets until 16:50. Walked and timed from the gangway. Every time and fare in this guide was checked against the sources listed above on 27 October 2026; where we had to estimate (a walk, a taxi in traffic), the text says so. Timetables change — if you find one that has, tell us and we will fix it.
